Frelser are a band from Denmark that plays an old school form of black metal and this is a review of their 2025 album "Afgrundsprofeti" which was released by Vendetta Records.
Cello's and synths start off the album before going into a heavier direction while a couple of tracks are also very long and epic in length. When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling and the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody.
Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams while the music is very heavily rooted in the classic Scandinavian tradition. All of the musical instruments on the recording also have a very powerful sound to them along with a couple of the tracks also adding in a small amount of clean playing.
At times the album also gets very atmospheric sounding as well as the slower sections of the songs also adding in a touch of doom metal and one of the tracks is also an instrumental and adds in a brief use of acoustic guitars, all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of Danish and English and cover existential dread, decay, damnation and the illusion of salvation.
In my opinion Frelser are a very great sounding old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Afgrundsprofeti" "The Measure of Man" and "Amor Fati". 8 out of 10.
