Wilt/Huginn/Vendetta Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Canada's  Wilt  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  mixture  of  black  and  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Huginn"  which  was  released  by  Vendetta  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Elements  of  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  On  this  recording  Wilt  takes  and  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  doom  metal  to  show  some  progression  from  their  previous  releases.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  fires,  atrocities,  tragedy's  and  grievance  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wilt  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "1831".  8 out  of  10.

Wilt/Ruin/Vendetta/2018 CD Review

  Wilt  are  a  band  from  Winnipeg,  Manitoba,  Canada  that  plays  an  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Ruin"  which  will  be  released  in  May  by  Vendetta.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  fashion  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  depressive  black  metal  screams.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  atmospheric  fashion  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  using  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  as  well  as  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  they  close  the  album  with  an  instrumental.

  On  this  recording  Wilt  takes  the  cascadian,  atmospheric  and  depressive  sides  of  black  metal  and  mixes  them  together  to  create  a  very  diverse  album,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  heartbreak  and  despair  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wilt  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Into  The  unknown"  and  "Veil  of  GOld".  8  out  of  10.

Wilt Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

Wilt is cold, dark, deprived black metal in its truest form hailing from the frozen prairies of Central Canada. Wilt intends to take you on a journey into the depths of your soul and every crevice of the earth.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?/

The best way to describe our sound is cold, dark and sorrowful yet beautiful. We try and capture a lot of emotion  lyrically. Musically we lock you into a trance-like-state. We want you to be drowned in a wall of sound and experience the beauty of the cold northern plains.

3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Typically we sing about strengths and weaknesses of human emotion, nature thematic and how it was in the olden days and now its tainted by technology etc.  

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

The meaning behind the name is simple. Wilt, much like a plant full of life. It will eventually perish so, the inspiration behind the name is to encompass music about death, decaying and the dying. 

5. Currently there are only 2 members in the band are you planning on expanding the line up in the future?

We probably will proceed from here to add a permanent studio drummer, but who knows.. we work together so well that another opinion may tarnish the sound or improve it, we haven't thought of it but it would be.

6. Currently the band is signed to Winter Wolf Records, how did you get in contact with this label and how would you describe the support that they have given you so far?

Winter Wolf Records is my (Brett) own start up label which is still in it's early stages. I'm currently working with Chris from the band Winterus. Together we've been working to get the label off the ground and able to support new bands. 

7. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

The overall feedback as been  overwhelming, from all parts of the world. So unexpected that an EP has been getting a copious amount of traffic.  Its incredible, we didn't expect that at all

8. Are there any other musical projects besides this band or is this a full time line up?

Jordan: I currently sing in 2 other major bands spanning from Death thrash to melodic death metal.

Brett: Right now I have a few projects on the go but, Wilt is my main priority.

9. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

In future releases I see us expanding on our sound. I would like to have more ambient passages, acoustic parts as well and clean vocal sections.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Jordan: For me, I love Pallbearer, Loss, Lord Mantis, Heresiarch and Incantation. I try and bring the aesthetic of them into Wilt but, making my own unique sound as well

Brett: My influences vary. I'm influenced by a lot of folk music as well as Black and Doom metal bands. I listen to bands like Agalloch, Worm Ouroboros, Winterfylleth, and Woods Of Ypres to name a few.

11. Does Paganism or Occultism play any role in your music?

We do dabble a little bit in paganism, but we don't try and dwell on the topic as it seems way too common. We probably will in future songs but on the EP there isn't much pagan content. As for the occult we try and steer away from that as much as possible, we want this to be a thing of darkness and beauty, organic not of the occult which can be lost in translation

12. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Jordan: Besides music i sit at home and watch old school horror movies but with all these bands under my belt i usually lyrics write 24/7

Brett: Besides Work, writing, producing and recording other bands than my own. I like Western European history and folklore. Right now I'm learning Old English.

13. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Wilt/Self Titled/2012 EP Review

  Wilt  are  a  duo  from  Manitoba,  Canada  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  and  self  released  2012  ep.

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  drumming  with  not  much  in  the  way  of  fast  playing  or  blast  beats,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  atmospheric  black  metal  riffs  that  have  a  very  modern,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  soft  and  clean  playing,  while  the   lead  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  very  melodic  sounding  guitar  solos  and  leads

  Vocals  are  all  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature  and  melancholy  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and primitive  sound  to  it  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Wilt  are  a  very  great  sounding  modern,  raw  and  primitive  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Autumn  Veil"  and  "Empyrean".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
