Thrudvangar/Vegvisir/Trollzorn/2020 Full Length Review

Thrudvangar  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  Viking  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2020  album  "Vegvisir"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  Trollzorn.

Epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  while  also  mixing  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  The  riffs  also  use  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  some  clean  Viking  vocals  being  heard  on  a  couple  of  track  as  well  as the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams.

When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  touches  of  death  metal  when  they  adopt  a  more  deeper  approach.  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  briefly  it  also gives the music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  most  of  the  music  also sticks   to  a  mid  tempo  direction  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard.

On  this  recording  Thrudvangar  takes  their  Viking  style  of black  metal  into  more  of  a  melodic  and  mid  tempo  musical  direction. The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  ancient  myths  and  legends  of  the  Vikings.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Thrudvangar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  Viking  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Vegvisir"  "Ran" "Siegvaters  Maid"  and  "Alles  was  bleibt".  8  out  of  10.

Thrudvangar Interview

1. Can you give us an update on what is going on with the band these days

   >The band is going well now and were are happy to release the new CD about our new Label "Massacre Records".

2. How would you describe the musical sound of the new album and how it differs from previous releases?

   >On ourselve we dont describe our music to any genres. We make only metal with different influence.
The difference is, that we have no keyboards on this CD like the others before.

3. I have noticed that the keyboards of earlier albums where absent, what was the decision behind going for a more straight forward metal sound?

>Anrdreas told us 2 years before to leave the band and he would only play the Live-Gigs until the new Cd will be release.
It was his own decision to get more room for himself. But he is always a part of us and very good friend.

4. I know that the lyrics and the bands name come from Norse Paganism, can you tell us a little bit more about your interests this topic?

   >We start with this lyrics in 2000(?) because it was a very interesting theme for us and also inspired of bands from the 90s-era.
So we start with this to write some lyrics and released our first CD in 2004 and it was always a part of us.

5. I have noticed that the lyrics are all written in German, do you feel this is the perfect fit for the topics you cover in your songs?

   >Yes,that´s the best way for us to say what we have to say about it.We have try it earlier with some english songs but it was not the same for us.

6. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

   >Any show is good for us.We have no favorite. We had learned that little club gigs are better than big gigs sometimes. We going on stage and show that we have fun
on this what we are doing and i think the people in front of stage will see this and starting also to have it.

7. Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

   >Yes,there are some plans in 2014 to go on some stages but there are no concrete dates. We will try to come more outside of germany.

8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of viking and black metal?

   >It´s different. You have some hardliners of both sides and sometimes you´re not true enough for both sides.
But this is no problem for us, we get many positives mails and messages around the world and sometimes from peoples where you have never think before to get  a positive feedback.

9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

   >We dont know it.We will make music where we want to have fun and where we feel free. We will see whats going on in the future.

10. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your newer music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

   >The influence of any member are different. There are BlackMetal, Grind, Rock and so on.But, how i said, the earlier 90s-era with bands like Bathory,Amorphis and so on, are all times favorites for all of us.Today i cannot say "Wow, fucking great".There are no bands for me.

11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

   >Oh i think,after our music were really boring: Books,Family,Dog,Motorcycle ..... , yes that the truth ;)

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

   >Thank you for this and hope we make it in near future again and sorry for my bad english :),and we will see you all on our shows,
    Cheers,Christian + Thrudvangar

Thrudvangar/Tiwaz/Massacre Records/2013 CD Review

Thrudvangar  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  plays  viking/black  metal  with  atmospheric  and  melodic  elements  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  album  "Tiwaz"  which  was  released  by  Massacre  Records.

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  playing  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  viking/black  metal  riffs  that  utilize  some  melody  and  thrash  influences  in  the  riffing,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  very  melodic  sounding  viking  metal  guitar  solos  and  leads,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  use  finger  picking  and  full  chords  to  add  medieval  elements  to  the  album.

Vocals  range  from  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  to  deep  death  metal  growls  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  in  addition  there  is  a  brief  use  of  clean  singing  being  utilized  on  one  song,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  Nordic  Paganism  and  Mythology,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  professional  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording.

In  my  opinion  Thrudvanger  are  a  very  great  sounding  viking/black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Tiwaz"  "Frei"  "Brueder"  and  "Abschied".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
