Rorcal/Silence/Hummus Records/2023 Full Length Review

 

  Switzerland's  Rorcal  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  a  mixture  of  dissonant  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  drone,  industrial  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2023  album  "Silence"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Hummus  Records.

  Industrial  style  soundscapes  and  harsh  noises  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  and  dissonant  structures.

  Elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  Drones  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  parts  of  the  album  along  with  the  songs  also  bringing  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,

  Growls  can  also  be  heard  at  times  along  with  some  songs  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  samples.  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  one  song  also  adding  in  a  very  brief  use  of  clean  yet  aggressive  sounding  industrial  metal  vocals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  tragedy  and  horror  stories.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Rorcal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dissonant  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  drone,  industrial  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Childhood  Is  A  Knife  In  The  Throat"  "Constant  Void"  and  "No  Alleviation,  Even  in  Death".  8  out  of  10.

Rorcal/Earthflesh/Witch Covven/Hummus Records/2021 Collaboration Album Review

 

  Switzerland's  Rorcal  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  them  teaming  up  with  solo  project  Earthflesh  and  bring  in  a  mixture  of  raw  black,  doom,  sludge  metal,  drone  and  harsh  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  collaboration  album  "Witch  Coven"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  Hummus  Records.

  Melodic  chants  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction  while  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  the  heaviness  of  sludge  metal.  Harsh  noises  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavy  riffs  along  with  both  of  their  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  while  angry  shouts  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  songs.  At  times  the  riffing  also  get  very  repetitive  sounding  repeating  the  same  riffs  for  a  few  minutes  along  with  some  drones  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording,  dark  sounding  melodies  can  also  be  heard  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up a   decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  second  track  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  On  this  recording  Rorcal  takes  their  mixture  of  raw  black,  sludge,  doom  metal  and  rone  and  mixes  it  with  Earthflesh's  style  of  harsh  noise  to  create  something  very  different.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  apocalyptic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  collaboration  between  Rorcal  and  Earthflesh  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black,  sludge,  doom  metal,  drone  and  harsh  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Happiness  Sucks,  So  Do  You".  8  out  of  10.

Rorcal/Muladona/Hummus Records/2019 CD Review

  Switzerland's  Rorcal  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  continues  their  mixture  of  drone,  post  black,  doom,  sludge  metal  from  previous  releases  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2019  album  "Muladona"  which  was  released  by  Hummus  Records.

  Atmospheric  sounding  drones  start  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Elements  of  sludge  and  doom  metal  can  also  be  heard  in  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.

  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  All  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  along  with  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic post  metal  style  when  they  are  utilized.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Spoken  word  parts  and  drones  also  return  on  some  of  the  later  tracks  as  well  as  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  touches  of  post  hardcore,  synths  can  also be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  a  persons  relationship  with  is  mother  and  how  it  leads  to  murder  mixed  in  with  some  supernatural  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Rorcal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  drone,  post  black,  sludge  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "She  Drained  You  Of  Your  Innocence  And  You  Poisoned  Her  With  It"  "Carnation  Was  Not  The  Smell  Of  Death,  They  Where  the  Smell  Of  Desire"  and  "I  Was    The  Muladona's  Seventh  Tale".  8  out  of  10.

Rorcal/Creon/Halo Of Flies/2016 CD Review

  Switzerland's  Rorcal  have  returned  with  a  new  album  which  shows  them  continuing  the  black  metal,  sludge  and  doom  metal  of  previous  recordings  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "Creon"  which  will  be  released  in  March  by  Halo  Of  Flies.

   Tremolo  picking  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  very  slow  doom/sludge  metal  riffing  and  drums  a  few  seconds  later  and  after  awhile  the  music  starts  mixing  in  dark  sounding  melodies  and  after  a  few  minutes  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  depressive  black  metal  direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  being  utilized.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length and  the  vocals  also  throw  in grim  growls  at  times  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  it  brings  in  more  of  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  that  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  and  you  can  also  hear  a  touch  of  post  metal  and  hardcore  in  the  slower  doom  and  sludge  sections  of  the  songs  and  there  is  also  a  brief  use  of  melodic  singing  and  spoken  word  parts.

  With  this  recording  Rorcal  continues  their  mixture  of  black  metal,  doom  and  sludge  from  previous  recordings  while  also  speeding  up  a  bit  and  getting  more  raw  and  aggressive,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  yet  powerful  at  the  same  time  while  the  lyrics  are  a  concept  album  based  upon  on  the  deaths  of  Polynices,  Antigone,  Haemon,  and  Eurydice  from  Greek  Mythology.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording from  Rorcal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  sludge  and  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Polynices"  and  "Eurydice".  8  out  of  10.

Rorcal/Process Of Guilt/Lost Pilgrims Records/2014 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Switzerland's  Rorcal  and  Portugal's  Process  of  Guilt  which  was  released  by  Lost  Pilgrims  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Rorcal  a  band  that  has  been  featured  plenty  of  times  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal,  doom,  drone  and  sludge.

  Ambient  sounding  drones  start  off  their  side  of  the  split  and  a  few  seconds  alter  the  music  goes  into  more  of  a  slow  sludge  direction  along  with  some  aggressive  vocals  as  well  as  mixing  it  in  with  some  fast  and  raw  black  metal,  high  pitched  screams  and  a  small  amount  of  blast  beats  and  the  band  also  uses  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  after  awhile  the  band  finds  its  own  style  on  this  songs  which  I  would  describe  as  being  raw  black/sludge  metal.

  Rorcal  continue  their  raw  approach  to  black  metal  on  this  recording  as  well  as  retaining  the  sludge  and  doom  metal  elements  that  have  always  been  a  huge  part  of  the  bands  musical  style,  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  sounds  while  the  lyrics  focus  on  a  dark  subject  matter.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Rorcal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "X".

  Next  up  is  Process  Of  Guilt  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  mixture  of  sludge,  doom,  death  and  post  metal.

  A  few  dark  and  atmospheric  sounding  drone  starts  off  their  side  of  the  split  and  a  few  seconds  later  high  pitched  sludge  metal  screams  find  their  way  into  the  music  which  slowly  leads  up  to  a  very  heavy  and  slow  musical  direction  as  well  as  bringing  in  a  small  amount  of  melody  and  death  metal  growls  and  most  of  their  tracks  the  band  brings  to  their  side  of  the  split  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  utilize  a  great  amount  of  heavy  reverb  .

  Process  Of  Guilt  creates  a  very  heavy  and  modern  style  of  post  sludge/doom  metal  on  this  recording  which  they  also  combine  with  the  heaviness  of  death  metal  and  the y also  manage  to  keep  everything  in  a  slower  musical  production,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  desperation,  sadness,  solitude  and  suicide  themes.

  Process  Of  Guilt  create   another  great  example  of  post,  doom/sludge  and  death  metal  with  this  release  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Liar  (Mouvement  II)".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  black  metal,  doom  and  sludge.  8  out  of  10.

Rorcal/Vilagvege - Live In Geneva/Cal of Ror Records/2014 Live CD Review

  Rorcal  are  a  band  from  Switzerland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  raw  style  of  black  metal  which  they  also  mix  with  doom  metal,  sludge  and  drone  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  live  2014  album  "Vilagveve  -  Live  In  Geneva"  which  was  released  by  Cal  of  Ror  Records.

  Percussion  sound  and  drums  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  and  drones  a  few  seconds  later  and  on  the  second  track  the  music  starts  going  for  more  of  a  doom  and  sludge  metal  sound  along  with  some  high  pitched  screams  that  bring  more  of  a  black  metal  influence  into  the  bands  musical  style.  

  A  small  portion  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  the  band  starts  adding  in  blast  beats  and  more  of  a  raw  black  meal  direction  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  as  well  as  taking  the  black  metal  parts  and  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  which  also  gets  mixed in  with  the bands  sludge  roots.

  As  the  album  progresses  you  can  hear  the  crowd  reacting  more  to  the  music  along  with  the  band  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  operatic  female  vocals  and  classical  influences  which  also  return  on  a  later  track  as  well  before  returning  back  to  a  more  heavy  and  blackened  musical  direction  and  on  the  last  track  they  have  K.K  Null  and  Process  of  Guilt  as  quests

  Rorcal  takes  every  song  of  their  2013  album  and  plays  them  all  live  as  well  as  bringing  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  approach  out  in  the  live  setting  while  the  live  material  still  has  a  bit  of  a  doom  and  sludge  sound,  the  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  focus  more  on  a  dark  subject  manner.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Rorcal  and  if  you  enjoyed  their  studio  material,  you  should  enjoy  the  live  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "D'  "IV"  and  "VI".  8  out  of  10.

  Rorcal  are  a  band  from  Switzerland  that    has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  with  a  musical  style  on  this  recording  that  I  would  describe  as  being  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient,  sludge,  doom  and  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of their  2013  album  "Vilagveve"  which  was  released  by  Cal  Of  Ror  Records.

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  some  fast  drumming  and  blast  beats  being  utilized  at  times,  while  the  synths  when  they  are  used  bring  a  dark  ambient/drone  sound  to  the  recording,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful s ound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  the  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow, mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  heavy  sludge  and  doom  with  dark,  raw  and  primitive  black  metal  with  a  great  amount  of  heavy  distortion  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  melody  being  thrown  into  the  riffing  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this   recording.

  Vocals  are  mostly high  pitched  depressive  screams  that  have  a  depressive  tone  to  them  at  times  as  well  as  a  brief  use  of  male  and  female  that  bring  an  opera  feeling  to  the  recording,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Rorcal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  enjoy  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Doom"  "Black  V"  and  "Black  VI".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Profond Barathe/Rorcal/Malvoisie/Split Black/Cal Of Ror Records/2012 Split CD Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  between  3  bands  from  Switzerland  Profund  Barathe,  Rorcal  and  Malvoise  which  was  released  by  Cal  Of  Ror  Records  during  the  year  of  2012  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Prof0nd  Barathe  which  plays  an  experimental  form  of  depressive  black  metal  mixed  with  doom.

  Synths  bring  a  very  dark,  experimental,  ambient  occult  and  avant  garde  sound  to  the  music  while  the  guitars are  all  slow  riffs  that  combine  depressive  black metal  with  drone/doom  metal  with  the  song  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  mixing  in  some  dark  ambient  guitar  melodies  in  the  riffing,  as  for  the  acoustic  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  they  use  finger  picking  to  add  another  dark  dimension  to  the  music.

  Vocals  are  a  mixture  of  clean  singing  Gregorian  chants  and  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  brief  use  of  whispers,  while  the  song  themes  focus  on  darkness,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  evil  and  heavy  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  Profond  Barathe  are  a  very  great  sounding  experimental  depressive  black  metal ,  drone,  doom  metal  hybrid  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Rorcal  with  this  release  they  go  for  more  of  a  modern  day  black  metal  sound  mixed  in  with  some  sludge  and  doom  metal.

    Drums  are  all  slow  to  mid  paced  playing  with  some  fast drumming  and  blast  beats,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  dark  tone  with  riffs  that  follow  the  riffing  that  is  coming  out  of  the  guitars,  as  for  the  synths  when  they  are  utilize  they  bring  a  very  dark  and  atmospheric  sound  to  the  music.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  depressive  with  a  more  modern  sound  along  with  some  doom  and  sludge  influences  being  incorporated  in  the  long  and  epic  song.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  depressive  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw,  heavy  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  the  song  Rorcal  brings  to  the  split  is  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  depressive  black  metal  song  and  my  favorite  one  with  some  doom  and  sludge  elements  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED.

  Closing  the  split  is  Malvoisie   a  band  that  plays  an  ambient  form  of  black  metal.

  Drums  are  all  slow  playing  with no  fast  playing  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording,  while  the  synths  bring  a  very  dark ambient,  avant  garde,  experimental  sound  to  the  music,  as  for  the  bass  playing  it  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  riffs  that  dominate  throughout  the  13  minute  song  along  with  some  heavy  distortion.

  Electric  Guitars  are  absent  from  the  song  with  the  bass  guitar  being  the  lead  instrument  on  this  recording  but  there  are  some  acoustic  guitars  which  use  full  chords  to  ad  a  more  avant  garde  sound  to  the  music  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  depressive  suicidal  black  metal screams,  growls  and  cries  along  with  some  clean  singing  chanting.

  Lyrics  cover  dark  and  satanic  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

  In  my  opinion  Malvoisie  are  a  very  great  sounding  ambient  depressive,  suicidal  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  style,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  3  way  split  and  I  would  recommend  this  to  all  fans  of  experimental,  ambient,  depressive,  suicidal  black  metal  fans.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
