Black Altar/Vulture Lord/Deathiah Manifesto/Odium Records/2022 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Poland's  Black  Altar  and  Norway's  Vulture  Lord  called  "Deathiah  Manifesto"  which  will  be  released  on  January  15th  by  Odium  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Black  Altar  who  returns  with  their  satanic  style  of  black  metal.

 Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  apocalyptic  sounding  intro  which  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  synths  and  spoken  word  parts  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a r aw  feeling.

  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Misanthropy,  Darkness  and  Evil  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Black  Altar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK "Sacrilegious  Congregation".

  Next  up  is  Vulture  Lord  who  return  with  their  old  school  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  aggressive  thrash  metal  sound  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast b eats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  tremolo  picking  and  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  music  is  heavily  rooted  in  the  80's  to  90's  era.

  Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  When guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  old  school  style  as  well  as  some  death  metal  growls  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  songs  and  synth  can  also  be  heard  on  their  closing  track.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  Satanism,  Anti  Christianity,  Blasphemy,  Death  and  hatred  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Vulture  Lord  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  old  school  black  metal  with  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RFECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Dominoes  Of  Death".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  i  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  old  school  and  satanic  black  metal.  8  oout of  10.

Vulture Lord Interview

 

1.Can you give us an update on what has been going on with the band since the recording of the new album? 

- Nothing. After finishing mixing and mastering, we just revel in its glory. 

  

2.In June you have a new album coming out, musically how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past? 

- It's a direct continuation from our last release, written right after the Blasphemy EP. 

  

3.This is also your first release in 18 years, can you tell us a little bit more about what has been going on during that time frame? 

- Nefas and myself decided to go back to the primitive roots of Black Metal and created Beastcraft instead. On the side, Nefas and Diabolus still wrote tracks and made demos for a future Vulture album. Individually or together, the four original members have released many albums, with Urgehal, Shining, Carpathian Forest, Sarkom, Endezzma, Svarttjern, Hagl, Ulvehyrde, Den Saakaldte and the beforementioned Beastcraft, just to name a few of the bands. This, together with sessions live and on recordings by bands like Craft and Koldbrann, we've not laid dormat. 

  

4.Most of the music sounds closer to black metal but you refer to yourself as being 'death metal', can you tell us a little bit more about it? 

- It was initially not a pure satanic band, just people in opposition to religion and praising death in all its glorious forms. Black metal is satanic ergo Vulture Lord is not a black metal band. We are black deathrashing metal. 

  

5.Some of your lyrics cover satanic and anti Christian themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts? 

- Since I entered the black metal scene in '91, I have studied all the occult, satanic and dark arts I have come across. I have searched and I have practised for years. 

  

6.What are some of the other lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored over the years with the music? 

- Vulture Lord is a weapon against the white religions. All our lyrics is concentrated around that, written in the "old way/style". 

  

7.In the 90's you also went through a great amount of name changes, what was the cause of the name changes and also the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Vulture Lord'? 

- We went back and forth through styles, changing name for each time and also due to many line-up changes. Deformed Corpse was grindcore, Interment was death, Energumen was black, Coffin had a new line-up as well as Faun, the circle was ended with me teaming up with Diabolus again for Vulture Lord returning to our roots of death and thrash metal. It just shows the path I took, but could just as well be individual band. 

  

8.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the new album cover? 

- I wanted an enormous graveyard with a church, all overthrown and enthroned by the Vulture Lord. One can see the church transformed into the lair or chapel of the Vulture Lord, the lord of death, with the vultures circling the sky. The actual Desecration Rite is the figures emptying the graves, unhallowing the ground and throwing the Christians into the Abyss. 

  

9.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance? 

- We have never played live. 

  

10.The new album is going to be released on 'Odium Records', how would you compare working with this label to other labels you have been a part  of in the past? 

- Couldn't be more pleased. Total dedication and patience. 

  

11.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your newer music by fans of black, death and thrash metal? 

- Rightfully awesome.  

  

12.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of? 

- Carpathian Forest, Endezzma, Svarttjern, Ulvehyrde and Hagl are still going strong. 

  

13.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future? 

- We will continue our step backwards into our combination of old-school black, thrash and death metal. 

  

14.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays? 

- I have my journey in metal with me from the seventies and up, but what has inspired Vulture Lord is from the decade between 1984-94, with Slayer, Celtic Frost, Napalm Death, Death, Razor, Exodus, Metallica, Darkthrone, Metal Church, Acheron, Bathory, Necrophagia, Venom, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Immortal, Necromantia and Massacre. I still prefer to listen to music from the eighties and nineties. 

  

15.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts? 

- Fight religion and seek to the originators of metal.

Vulture Lord/Desecration Rite/Odium Records/2021 CD Review

 

  Vulture  Lord  are  a  band  from  Norway  that  plays  an  old  school  form  of  black  metal  with  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Desecration  Rite"  which  will  be  released  in  June  by  Odium  Records.

  A  very  dark  sounding  intro  along  with  some  spoken  word  and  movie  samples  start  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  yet  old  school  style.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  music  also  brings  in  a  great  amount  of  first  wave  and  thrash  metal  elements. Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  as  well  as  some  of  the  riffing  also  showing  an  influence  of  death  metal,  the  songs  also  add  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  ad  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard.

  Vulture  lord  plays  a  musical  style  that  is  mostly  rooted  in  the  old  school  tradition of  black  metal  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  elements  of  death  and  thrash  metal  to  update  the  genre  for  the  modern  era.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  pestilence,  satanism,  blasphemy  and  anti  Christianity  themes.   

  In  my  opinion  Vulture  Lord  are  a  very  great  sounding  old  school  mixture  of  black,  death  and  thrash  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bloodbound  Militia"  "Diabolical  intervention"  and  "Perverting  The  Bible".  8  out  of  10.
