Echancrure/Discours Sur Le Colonialisme/Le Crepusculr Du Soir Productions/ 2012 EP Review

Echancrure  are  a  1  man  band  from  France  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  that  started out  of  experimental  black  metal  but  have  evolved  more  into an  experimental  drone  act  with  this  new  recording  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  ep  "Discours  Sur  Le  Colonialisme"  which  was  released  by  Le  Creepuscule  Du  Soir  Productions.

Drum programming  are  all  slow  beats  that  have  a  trip  hop  feeling  to  them  as  well  as  some  more  militant  parts,  while  the  synths  and  sound  effects  bring  elements  of  industrial,  avant  garde,  experimental  and  noise  to  the  music,  as  for  the  saxophones  they  have  a  free  form  jazz  feeling  to  them  along  with  some  heavy  bass  lines  being  thrown  into  the  music  at  times  with  the  only  song  on  this  recording  being  over  20  minutes.

Vocals  are  mostly  spoken  word parts  with  some  hip  hop  and  rap  elements,  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  French  and  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  with  none  of  the  black  metal  influences  that  where  present  on  their  earlier  material.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  recording  from  Echancrure  and  while  it  does  not  have  the  black  metal  elements  the  earlier  releases  have, I still  feel  this  will  appeal  to  people  that  like  dark  and  experimental  music.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Echancrure Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about the project for those that have never heard of you before ?

There is not much to say as the project is very recent. I composed for a few years and a day I decided to release a split with a spanish black-metal band, friend of mine, Atrabilis. The track figuring on this CD was quite old but not released until early 2011. A few months later, my first album Paysage. Octobre. was thus completed and recorded. I released it almost immediately, in October 2011, and I'm glad to see that it was well received in France.

2. How would you describe your musical sound?

Echancrure is a mean to experiment; I'm not trying to make music in this or that style. For sure, I'm not doing black-metal anymore. The next record to be published - in February - is a rap record ! a remix of an entire album from the French artists Iris & Arm. I had only the voices a capella, and I made the music.
I don't want Echancrure to be rooted in a particular genre, emotion, ambiance, concept, etc. I want it to change from one record to another; a bit like Ulver did; but keeping a kind of essence, feeling, a representation of music that would be mine.

3. What are some of the concepts and subjects the band explores with the music ?

On Paysage. Octobre., texts and vocals were not that important; the most important was the atmosphere. But the next EP to be released in May is a musical interpretation of Césaire's Discourse on Colonialism, an anticolonial pamphlet.

4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?

Echancrure simply means notch. I thought it sounded good.

5. Currently you are unsigned are you looking for a label and if so what kind of label do you feel would be a perfect fit for the band?

I'm actually signed on Nihil Interit Records, a sub-label of Le Crépuscule du soir. I think it fits perfectly, because their "main goal is to release underground music, mostly dark, original..." Moreover, their prices are fair (around 7-10 €) and they're open to free download. But if I had to chose a greater label, I would chose Avant Garde Music.

6. Are there any other projects besides this band or is this a full time project ?

Yes ! I have a lot of projects. Echancrure and Galvauder (http://galvauder.bandcamp.com/) only are the tip of the iceberg. Many albums are already recorded and just waiting to be released.

7. What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

I do not know. I'll probably get more and more closer to contemporary classical music and jazz, two of my biggest influences. Paysage 2 is half written and recorded, and even if the atmosphere is similar to Paysage. Octobre.'s, a lot of new instruments and sounds have been added.

8. What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

I don't care about genres, and I like all that's unusual. Everything I listen to, everything I live, read or see is an influence. Talking about music, I'm listening a lot these days to the excellent Kayo Dot's Gamme Knife, Shostakovich's quartets, Al Kaïra Krew, Olivier Messiaen, Pat Metheny, Serge Teyssot-Gay, Heltah Skeltah, The Ex, etc.

9. On a worldwide level how has your music been recieved by fans of experimental, ambient and underground music?

As I was alone to make promotion so far, I mostly did it in France; therefore I do not know how it has been received worldwide...

10. Does Occultism play any role in the music?

Not at all.

11. Outside of music what are some of your interests?

Some of my interests are philosophy, literature, and girls.

12. Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Thank you very much ! I apologize for my bad english.

Echancrure/Paysage.Octobre/2012 CD Review

Echancrure are a band from France that started out as more post black metal but evolved more into dark ambient/drone with influences from industrial, experimental, doom and black metal with this recording and this is a review of their self released 2012 album "Paysage.Octobre".

Noise effects bring a very dark avant garde industrial feeling to the music, while the synths have a very dark ambient sound to them mixed in with some depressing sounding keys that have the feeling of some classical music being played on a piano, as well as some evil sounding violins.

Guitars are all noisy sounding leads with some noisy distortion that gives the music a black metal/drone feeling while the spoken word parts bring a depressive feeling to the music with a brief use of clean singing vocals and there are no lyrics present, as for the production it has a very dark, raw and primitive sound to it.

In my opinion Echancrure are a very good with their experimental dark ambient/drone band with a doom and black metal edge and while this might not appeal to the close minded fans of their early stuff you should enjoy this if you are more into experimental dark ambient. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Sans titre 4 " "Sans titre 8" and "Sans titre 9". RECOMMENDED BUY.

Atrabilis/Echancrure/Split/2011 EP Review

This is a review of a split between Spain's Atrabilis and France's Echancrure that was self released in 2011 and we will start off with Echancrure.

Drum programming is all slow to mid paced beats, while the synths bring a very dark ambient sound to the music, as for the bass playing it has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffs that are coming out of the guitars.

Rhythm guitars are all slow to mid paced depressive ambient black metal riffs with some melody that has a doom metal feeling to it as well as some shoegaze influences in addition the song is very long in length and epic sounding and there are no guitar solos or leads present on their song.

Vocals are all grim sounding depressive black metal screams and growls, while the lyrics are written in French and cover depressive themes, as for t he production it has a v ery dark, raw and primitve sound to it..

In my opinion Echancrure do a very good job with their depressive post black metal and if you are a fan of this style, you should check out this band.

Next up is Atrabilis a band I previously wrote about.

Drum programming ranges from slow, mid paced to fast beats, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing that is coming out of the guitars, as for the sound effects they bring in the dark ambient elements into the music.

Rhythm guitars are all slow, mid paced to fast depressive black metal riffs that are very raw and primitive sounding with some weird and distorted sounding melodies in addition the song is very long and there are no guitar solos or leads present on the song.

Vocals are all high pitched depressive black metal screams and cries with a brief spoken word part, while the lyrics are written in Spanish and cover negative themes, as for the production it has a very raw and primitive sound to it.

In my opinion Atrabilis have the best song on this recording and should appeal to depressive black metal fans.

In my opinion this is a very grat split and I would recommend this to all fans of DSBM, dark ambient and post black metal. RECOMMENDED BUY.
