Nyctophilia/Bezden/Death Prayer Records/2019 Full Length Review

Nyctophilia  are  a  solo  project  from  Poland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  ambient  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Bezden"  which  was  released  by  Death  Prayer  Records.

Night  winds  start  of  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  returns  on  some  of  the  later  songs.  Clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

Vocals  are  mostly  angry  yet  depressive  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  a  lot  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  as  well  as  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  and  there  are  also  a  couple  of  ambient  orientated  instrumentals.

On  this  recording  Nyctophilia  brought  in  elements  of  ambient  into  his  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  black  metal  to  create  something  very  different  from  previous  releases  without  losing  any  aggression.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in a  mixture  of  English  and  Polish  and  cover  death,  darkness,  coldness  and  Satanism  themes.  .

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nyctophilia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  depressive  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Bezden"  and  "Swiatlo  Wiecznosci".  8  out  of  10.

Nyctophilia/Ad Mortem Et Tenebrae/Wolfspell Records/2018 CD Review

Nyctophilia  are  a  solo  project  from  Poland  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  satanic  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2018  album  "At  Mortem  Et  Tenebrae"  which  will  be  released in  December  by  Wolfspell  Records.

Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  a  brief  use  of  rain  and  thunder  sounds  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  chaotic  style  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.

All of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  depressive  moments  as  well  as  some  whispers  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  some  songs  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  ambient  sounding  synths  and  as  the  album  progresses  the  guitar  leads  also  start  getting  more  melodic.

Nyctophilia  creates  another  recording  that  remains  true  to  the  atmospheric  and  depressive  style  of  satanic  black  metal  from  his  previous  releases,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  nature,  darkness  and  Satanism  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Nyctophilia  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  depressive  and  satanic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "With  Hate  Freezing  My  Veins"  and  "Through  Fullmoon  Forest".  8  out  of  10.

Nyctophilia Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the musical project?

1.Hails. Nyctophilia is the sound of  nature, death and darkness, i always try to create music that is sounds raw, dark and melancholic to reflect the thoughts that are inside me and pass on my message.

2.You have released a good amount of material so far this year, how would you describe the musical style of the current music?
2. Mainly i will always describe my music as Black Metal but i don’t want to limit myself. My music is atmospheric, depressive and melancholic and i always try to explore different approaches to Black Metal music. With that been said i keep myself away from modern sounding music which is nothing more then a piece of shit for me.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects you explore with your music?
3.Death, Darkness, Pain, Nature and Satanism. I try to cross the borders of my mind and body to show people how pathetic their life can be and how blind they are in todays world.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Nyctophilia'?
4.Nyctophilia is the cult of darkness and night, finding peace through darkness and embracing it. When i was thinking about the name for this project i new i need something that will truly reflect the sound and lyrical topics inspired by nature and death. That’s why i choose the name Nyctophilia.

5.With this project you record everything by yourself but also have experience working with other musicians in your other projects, how would you compare the two?
5.It is very different. When i create music myself i have no boundaries and no restrictions of what i can do.  When i work with other people (which is very hard for me) there are lot’s of compromises to be carried but of course through that different and interesting music can be done.

6.This year alone you have been a part of a couple of splits with 'Nihil Invocation' and 'Nachteule', how would you compare you style to theirs?

6.First, both bands are great, otherwise i wouldn’t do a split with them. Nihil Invocation is very raw sounding and bleak and you can hear the nihilistic atmosphere within their music. Nachteule is very atmospheric focused on nature black metal. Both of them have some similarities to Nyctophilia in terms of sound and lyrics.

7.Since 2015 you have released a great amount of music with this project, does music take up a lot of your time?
7.I can’t propely answer this question because it all depends on a inspiration i get. Sometimes i can write and record very quick and sometimes that process can take couple of months. The process that definitely takes alot of time is mixing the records.

8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
8.For me it has been very good, i never thought that my music will reach so many people and have such a good response.

9.What is going on with your other musical projects these days?
9.We try to record some music but nothing is certain. I can’t tell what the future will bring for other projects.

10.Where do you see yourself heading into as a musician in the future?
10.Definitely progressing and exploring different subjects of black metal music. I don’t really see myself playing for example live shows with Nyctophilia but who knows, maybe one day.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
11.It’s really wide range of anything that is dark sounding and melancholic but to name a few is The True Mayhem, Xasthur, Nyktalgia, Elysian Blaze, definetly 2nd wave of black metal as well as some classical music.

12.How would you describe your views on Satanism?
12. I see Satanism as the path of enlightenment and knowledge. Satan is the true light and Satan is the truth.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?
13.I would like to thank you for this interview and anyone who took time to read it and tried to understand my thoughts. Hail Darkness! Hail Death!

Nyctophilia/Dwelling In The Fullmoon Light/2017 Full Length Review

Nyctophilia  are  a  solo  project  from  Poland  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  self  released  2017  album  "Dwelling  In  The  Fullmoon  Light".

Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes  into  a  heavier  direction while  also  introducing  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  onto  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  gives  the  songs  a  raw  feeling.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  synths  are  also  mixed  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  along  with  the  guitar  leads  being  done  in  a  very  raw  yet  melodic  fashion  and  a  great  portion  of  the  tracks a re  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  the  riffs  also  bring  in  a  decent  amount  of  dark  sounding  melodies.  and  all  of the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

Nyctophilia  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw,  atmospheric  and  depressive  sounding,  the  production  sounds  very  dark,  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  darkness,  coldness  and  Satanism  themes.

In  my  opinion  Nyctophilia  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw,  atmospheric  and  depressive  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "As  Nothing  Remains  Here"  and  "Alone  Abandoned  In  Darkness".  8  out  of  10.
