Fortress Of The Olden Days/Wintaar/Von Ruinen und Einsamkeit/Death Prayer Records/2018 Split EP Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Germany's  Fortress  Of  The  Olden  Days  and  Russia's  Wintaar  called  "Von  Ruinen   und  Einsamkeit"  which  was  released  in  2018  by  Death  prayer  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Fortress  Of  The  Olden  Days  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  synths  and  dark  soundscapes  before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  The  only  track  that  is  presented  on  his  side  of t he  recording  is  over  14  minutes  in  length  while t he  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  and  clean  singing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can be  heard  which  also  gives  the  track  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  the  song  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  growls  also  being  utilized  at  times,  when  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  night  and  rebellion  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Fortress  Of  The  Olden  Days  is  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  Next  up  is  Wintaar  who  return  with  their  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  fwinter  sounds before  going  into  a  heavier  musical  direction.  Both  of  their  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  lot  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  melodic  style. Throughout  their  side  of  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  classical  guitars  and  synths  can  also  be  heard  briefly.   The  production  sounds  very  dark  and r aw  while  the  lyrics  cover  winter  and  nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wintaar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Winter  Dawn  over  The  Mountain's  Castle".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.

Wintaar/Songs Of White Wilderness/Death Prayer Records/2018 Full Length Review

 

  This  is  another  review  of  a  recording  from  Russia's  solo  project  Wintaar  which  showed  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric,  melodic,  old  school  and  raw  form  of  black  metal  and  the  album  was  released  in  2018  and  called  "Songs  of  White  Wilderness".  which  was  released  by  Death  Prayer  Records.

  Drum b eats  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  heavy  yet  melodic  riffing  a  few  seconds  later  while  most  of  the  tracks a re  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  The  solos  and  leads  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  as  well  as  the  vocals  being  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  growls  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  some  of  the  tracks  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  along  with  the  music  also  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  both  old  school  and  modern  influences   as  well  as  one  of  the  songs  also  introducing  winter  orientated  soundscapes  onto  the  album.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  winter  and  nature  themes.

Wintaar/Forgotten Hymns Of The Urals/Death Prayer Records/2018 Full Length Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Russia's  solo  project  Wintaar  which  is  also  done  in  a  very  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  the  album  was  released  in  2018  by  Death  Prayer  Records  and  called  "Hymns  Of  The  Urals".

 Atmospheric  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  songs  at  times.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody  along  with  all  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while t he  tremolo  picking  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  songs  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  Spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  along  with  the  vocals  also  going  into  a deeper  direction  on  some  of  the  tracks  as  well  as  a  couple  of  later  songs  also  introducing  clean  playing  and  classical  guitars  into  the  music  and  the  album  closes  with  an  instrumental.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Celtic  Paganism,  The  Ural  Region  of  Russia,  Winter  and  Nature  themes. 

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wintaar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Morrigan"  and  "Night  Wintersky".  8  out  of  10.

  This  is  a  review  of  an  earlier  release  from  Russia's  solo  project  Wintaar  which  showed  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  style  of  black  metal  and  the  album  was  originally  released  in  2018  and  called  "Nightchants".

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  before  going  into  a  very  fast  and  raw  musical  direction  which  also  utilizes  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  A  couple  of  the  tracks  are  also  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  atmospheric  moments  as  well  as  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  album  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them,  one  track  also  adds  in  a  brief  use  of  nature  orientated  soundscapes  and  synths.

  On  this  recording  Wintaar  played  a  style  of  black  metal  that  was  very  atmospheric,  melodic  and  raw  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  Winter  and  Nature  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  was  a  very  great  sounding  recording  from  Wintaar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  melodic  and  raw  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "With  Night  Comes  Evil"  and  "Wintraw".  8  out  of  10.

Wintaar/Tear You Down/Satanath Records/Valgriind/Svanrenne Music/2021 CD Review

 

  Wintaar  are  a  band  from  Russia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Tear  You  Down"  which  was  released  as  a  joint  effort  between  Satanath  Records,  Valgriind  and  Svanrenne  Music.

  A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  album  while  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a decent  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  some  melodies  also  being  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing,  at  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  and  a  couple  of  songs  also  introduces  clean  playing  onto  the  recording.  

  On this  recording  Wintaar  plays  a  style  of  black  emtal  that  is  very  atmospheric,  aggressive  and  guitar  driven.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  death  worship  and  personal  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Wintaar  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Time  Devours  Light"  "The  Circle"  and  "Buried  in  My  Own  Sorrow".  8  out  of  10.

Ancient Gate/Wintaar/Morbid Gates Of Winter/2019 Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Argentina's  Ancient  Gate  and  Russia's  Wintaar  called  "Morbid  Gates  Of  Winter"  which  was  self  released  in  2019  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Ancient  Gate  who  returns  with  his  old  school  and  atmosphere  style  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  raw  tremolo  picking  along  with  some  grim  yet  high  pitched  black  metal  screams.  Most  of  the  music  is  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  90's  era  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  his  side  of  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard  along  with  the  riffs  also  adding  in  some  melodies.  Both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  adds  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  the  guitar  solos  and  leads  being  done  in  a  very  melodic  style,  when  keyboards  are  utilized  they  also  give  the  songs  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  horror,  legends  and  cosmos  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Ancient  Gate  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  old  school  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Beholding  Dead  Horizons".

  Next  up  is  Wintaar  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  old  school  form  of  black  metal.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  a  very  fast  and  raw  sound  which  also  uses  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  emtal  screams  while  the  songs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  90's  influences  and  the  guitar  leads  are  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style.

  Melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  the  music  also  capturing  a  very  lo-fi  atmosphere  at  times  as  well  as  adding  in  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  towards  the  end  a  brief  use  of  growls  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  old  school  while  the  lyrics  cover  winter,  nature  and  night  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Wintaar  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  old  school  black  metal  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of t he  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Hail  To  Eternal  Night".  8  out  of  10.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  raw,  atmospheric  and  old  school  black  metal.  8  out  of  10.
