Lurid/Fire Spell/Vendetta Records/2022 EP Review

Lurid  are  a  band  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  has  been  featured on  this  recording  plays  an  aggressive  mixture  of  black  and d eath  metal  and  this  is  a review  of  their  2022  ep  "Fire  Spell"  which  was  released  by  Vendetta  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  vocals  also  add  in  a  small  amount  of  death  metal  growls  at  times.  When  the  music  speeds  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  are  also  a  very  huge  part  of  the  recording.

The  songs  also  mix  both  the  old  school  and  modern  eras  together  while  melodies  can  also  be  heard  in  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  along  with  the  solos  and  leads  also  being  done  in  a  very  dark,  raw  and  melodic  style  when  they  are  utilized as  well  as  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

On  this  recording  Lurid  takes  their  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  into  more  of  a  raw  and  aggressive  direction.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  witchcraft  and  darkness  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Lurid  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  black  and  death  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Burned  At  The  Stake"  and  "A  Wasting  Plague".  8  out  of  10.

Lurid Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?

We play straight forward black metal from the heart.

2.Recently you have released a demo, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that you went for on the recording?

We had 4 or 5 songs written prior to tracking the demo, a lot of it very melodic but we went with what we felt were the two strongest tracks at the time (Unchained, A Wasting Plague).

3.All of the band members have or had played in other bands as well as playing different styles of metal, what is it that you bring into the music of 'Lurid', that you were not able to bring in your previous or past groups?

Pat and Ricky to my knowledge have not played in bands for about 8-10 years until last year when Lurid started. Myself and Aidan (bass) are the only other ones that currently play in other projects, we are in a grindcore band called "Sewer Rat" where Aidan is on guitar and I also do drums, we've had that going since 2019. I also play guitar in a death metal band called Nucleus, since 2012. All 3 genres in my opinion have to be constructed differently and carefully to give the listener the full, proper experience of each respective genre. There's different visions between all the bands, so different approaches have to be taken. With Nucleus we always have both guitars doing different things, which is brought into Lurid but more for lead/harmony purposes. However, my drumming in Sewer Rat definitely has helped me write for Lurid since both grindcore and black metal have really upbeat and intense drumming.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music?

Darkness, death, misanthropy. We are trying to go more for a more occult vibe lyrically for this upcoming EP we are doing. Lyrics are honestly secondary to us, we spend all of our time focusing on the instruments.

5.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Lurid'?

I saw it in a Clive Barker book and thought it was cool.

6.Can you tell us a little bit more about the design in the band logo?

There were other sketches of the logo drawn months prior, I believe the logo we have now was a combination of all of them with the dripping letters and the crescent moon as part of the D. It seemed fitting for our music.

7.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

We have only played one show thus far (and was offered to us within an hour of our demo being out digitally), with Stormruler from St. Louis. It went great, especially for the first show. There is a video of a full set from a drum cam point of view. Stage performance was extra intense as we rehearsed the 5 songs we had at the time for a little over half an hour, and the video of our set is 25 minutes because we sped up everything!

8.Do you have any plans for any more shows in 2021?

Nothing planned. If we get offered anything worthwhile and we are able to do it, we absolutely will.

9.On a worldwide level, how has the reaction been to your music by fans of black metal?

Seeing as how Vendetta in Germany wanted to press this demo, I'd say so far so good. Everyone local to us and around the US to my knowledge has enjoyed it thus far.

10.What is going on with some of the other bands or musical projects these days that some of the band members are a part of?

As mentioned before, mine and Aidan's grindcore band Sewer Rat have a few shows lined up for the fall and are writing a full length album. Nucleus is also writing a full length album as well, hopefully both can be released at some point in 2022.

11.When can we expect a full length and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

As soon as we track our EP this coming weekend (Sep 11-12) we will immediately begin writing for a full length album. Musically, it seems that every song we write is more intense and aggressive than the last, so I'm planning by the time the full length is out it will be a memorable album that'll have the listener's attention grabbed the entire time. Hoping for a 2022 release as well.

12.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

Black metal from all around the world really, too many bands to name. Dissection and Sargeist are probably the biggest two. We all absolutely love Mercyful Fate as well. Nowadays I am personally stuck in the 80s and 90s with Shrapnel Records and US power metal, but for newer black metal, Seth - "La Morsure Du Christ", Lostregos - "Onde Calan Os Corazons, Ruxen As Pedras" and Mare Cognitum - "Solar Paroxysm" are three albums from 2021 I have had on constant rotation since I've heard them.

13.before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Nothing really, thanks for having me!

Lurid/Self Titled/Vendetta Records/2021 Demo Review

Lurid  are  a  band  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  titled  2021  demo  which  was  released  by  Vendetta  Records.

A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  demo  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  blast  beats  and  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  vocals  are  mostly  deep  death  metal  growls.

Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  while  one  of  the  tracks  is  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  along  with  some  elements  of  doom  metal  also  being  added  into  the  slower  sections  of  the  songs,  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

Lurid  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  a  very  raw  and  melodic  form  of  black  metal  and  mixes  it  with  elements  of  doom  and  death  metal  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  plague  themes.

In  my  opinion  Lurid  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  melodic  mixture  of  black  and  death  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Wasting  Plague".  8  out  of  10.
