Spire/Temple Of Khronos/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/2021 CD Review

Spire  are  a  band  from  Australia  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  progressive  and  psychedelic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2021  album  "Temple  Of  Khronos"  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories.

A  very  dark  sounding  intro  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  atmospheric  and  ambient  style  synths  onto  the  recording  which  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  dark  yet  melodic  style  and  chants  can  also  be  heard  in  the  background  briefly.

When  aggressive  vocals  are  utilized  they  also  add  in  a  semi  melodic  style  while  also  utilizing  a  good  amount  of  grim  black  metal  screams.  A  great  portion  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.

At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  progressive  sounding  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  tracks  also  adding  in  growls,  when  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  also  gives  the  album  more  of  a  raw  feeling  and  the  music  also  has  its  psychedelic  moments  and  as  the  recording  progresses  the  black  metal  screams  get  more  demented  and  high  pitched  sounding.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  space,  nihilism,  mysticism  and  mythological  themes.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Spire  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  progressive  and  psychedelic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Hymn  I  -Tyrant"  and  "Hymn  V  -  Khronos".  8  out  of  10.

Spire/Metamorph/Art Of Propaganda/2011 EP Review

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Spire  with  the  musical  style  being  an  atmospheric  and   ambient  form  of  black  metal  with  the  ep  being  called  "Metamorph"  and  released  by  Art  Of  Propaganda".

"-" begins  with  some  avant  garde  sound  effects  and  spoken  word  samples  and  the song  serves  as  an  intro  for  the  ep.

"Zygote"  begins  with  some  melodic  guitar  riffs  and  leads  along  with  some drum  beats  and  then  starts  getting  a  little  bit  more  heavy  and  dark  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  grim  sounding black metal  screams  start  kicking  in  and  towards  the  end  the  riffing  gets  slightly  faster  and  the  vocals  utilize  a  little  bit  more  hatred  and  the  song  closes  with  some  ambient  noises.

"Larva"  begins  with  some  dark  sounding  guitar  riffs  and  drum  beats  and  a  few  seconds  later  the  grim  black  metal  screams  make  their  presence  known  in  the  song  and  later  on  the  music  goes  into  a  faster  direction  for  awhile  before  returning  to  a  more  slow  and  atmospheric  direction  but  bringing  back  the  faster  parts  at  times  which  also  leads  to the  music  utilizing  more  melodic  elements  and  the  song  closes  with  some  ambient  drones.

"Parturience"  begins  with  primitive  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  atmospheric  sounds  and  after  a  minute  drum  beats  and  grim  vocals  start  creeping  their  way  into  the  song  along  with  some  background  synths  that  are  mixed  down  very  low and  then  the   music  starts  getting  a  little  bit  more  heavier  and  the  song  closes  with  some  avant  garde  drones.

"Mort"  begins  with  some  fast  and  primitive  ambient  black  metal  guitar  riffs,  drum  beats  and  grim  vocals  before  slowing  down  and  adding  in  some  atmospheric  guitar  leads  which  also  utilize  some  melody  as  well  as  coming  in  and  out  of  the  song  before  speeding  up  again  but  they  do  return  to  the  slower  sections  throughout  the  song  as  well  as  adding  a  good  amount  of  diverse elements  and  the  song  closes  with  some sound  effects  that  come  in and  out.

Song  lyrics  cover  Nihilism  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  ep  from  Spire  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric,  ambient  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Zygote"  and  "Mort".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
