1349/Massive Cauldron Of Chaos/Indie Recordings/2014 CD Review

Norway's 1349 have returned with a new recording which shows them continuing their trademark Norwegian black metal sound and this is a review of their 2014 album "Cauldron Of Chaos" which was released by Indie Recordings.

A very dark and atmospheric sound starts off the album along with some natural noises before going into more of a fast black metal direction along with some blast beats and grim screams and the guitar riffing also has some technical elements and more of a modern Norwegian sound to them and at times whispers and spoken word parts can be heard in the background.

There is a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts throughout the recording as well as a touch of death and thrash metal being added into their musical style and after awhile melodies are added into the music along with a small amount of guitar leads which also utilize a great amount of talent and skill in the way that they are structured.

All of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them and the music on this recording is more of a return to their roots type of sound and has a lot more aggression than their last 2 albums and later on during the album they bring in a very old school and raw style of black metal on a couple of their tracks which goes back to their very early material

1349 creates some of their heaviest material in years on this recording and they bring back a lot of aggression that has not been heard from them in years, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover darkness and armageddon themes.

In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from 1349 and if you are a fan of this band, you should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Slaves" "Golem" and "Godslayer". 8 out of 10.

1349/Revelations Of The Black Flame/Candlelight USA/2009 CD Review

1349 are a very well known band in the black metal scene that has also been interviewed and had their new album by this zine and this is a review of their 2009 album "Revelations Of The Black Flame" which was released by Candlelight USA during the year of 2009.

Drums alternate between slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a lot of brutal blast beats being thrown in, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the guitars and at times they have a very powerful sound of their own, as for the effects they being a dark avant garde feel to the music bringing in some occasional dark piano pieces.

Rhythm guitars alternate between slow, mid paced to fast black metal riffs with some death metal and thrash influences being thrown in the rhythm's along with some palm muting, while the lead guitars are very distorted and heavy sounding guitar solos, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized briefly brings some soft playing to the weird and heavy experimental music on this album.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep growls being thrown in at times, while the lyrics cover dark themes and some death type lyrics, as for the production on this recording which was recorded at Studio Studio Nyhagen under the full moon of December of 2008 and 2009 sounds very professional and you can hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.

In my opinion this was an underrated album from 1349 and I remember when it came out some fans where calling it a sellout and I did not check out this album myself until a year later, but when I finally did I thought it was different than their previous releases but still a good experimental black metal album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Invocation" Serrpentine Sibilance" and "Maggot Fetus". RECOMMENDED BUY.

1349/Demoniar/Prosphetic Records/2010 CD Review

1349 are a band from Norway that is a very well known black metal band around the world and have also been interviewed by this zine and this is a review of their 2010 album "Demonoir" which was released by Prosthetic Records.

Drums are mostly fast with a lot of brutal blast beats mixed in with some slow to mid paced drumming, while the bass playing which is kind of mixed down low in the mix has a dark tones with riffs that follow the guitars, as for the intro's they bring in avant garde effects to the music with only a small amount of synths being used on the last song.

Rhythm guitars are mostly fast black metal riffs with some slow and mid paced playing that also have a small amount of death metal and thrash influences, while the lead guitars are fast and melodic black metal guitar solos that utilize a lot of skill, as for the acoustic guitars when they are used they bring exotic scales and finger picking to the music.

Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams with some deep growls, clean singing vocals and spoken word passages, while the lyrics cover The Tunnels Of Set, the darker side of the Caballa, along with some other dark themes with the lyrics being written in both Norwegian and English, as for the production it is very professional sounding with all of the musical instruments having a brutal sound.

In my opinion this is another good album from 1349 and fans of this band will not be disappointed with the new album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Atomic Chapel" "The Devil Of The Deserts Of The Devil" and "Demoniar". RECOMMENDED BUY.

1349 Interview

1. Can you update us with what is going on with 1349 these days?

Seidemann: Right now we are rehearsing for the upcoming tour in the US with Cannibal Corpse as well as some scattered gigs.
There is also the upcoming release of our 5th album DEMONOIR!

> 2. How has the response been so far for the new material?
S: Those who have heard DEMONOIR have been very enthusiastic about it - as they should be since this is 1349 at its very best!

> 3. I have seen you play the U.S before but it was with an American drummer instead of Frost, will Frost be playing on the upcoming tour?
S: Frost will play the upcoming tour with us as well as the festivals etc this summer. We have used Tony Laureano on our previous tours and he is also a kickass drummer.

> 4. How would you describe the lyrical content of the new material?
S: Dark and grim yet not devoid of poetical beauty. It is all in the ear of the beholder... or listener in this case.

> 5. How has the support been so far by Candlelight Records?
S: We are signed to indie productions in Norway now so whatever Candlelight feels in no longer any concern of mine, something I personally am eternally grateful for.

> 6. What are some of the best shows that you have played so far?
S: There has been a lot of good shows, playing with Celtic Frost was great, playing with Carcass was great, so I am hard pressed to find just one show that stands out.

> 7. How would you compare the American audiences to the other countries that you have played so far?
S: The american crowds are great, a lot of die-hards there. You guys kick ass!

> 8. When do you plan on recording the next album and what direction do you see the music heading into?
S: The new 1349 album will be out on the 26-27th of April and will head into even more extreme territory than we have ever done before. Prepare to be astounded, bedazzled and otherwise stupefied!

> 9. Out off all the albums that you have recorded so far which one are you the most satisfied with?
S: Im happy with all of them but at the moment my uttermost satisfaction lies with DEMONOIR.

> 10. What are some bands or music styles that have influenced your music and what are you listening to nowadays?
S: Seeing how 1349 consists of 4 individuals with wildly differing tastes and expressions it is hard for me to pinpoint the influences of the others. Prior to this album I was listening to nothing but jazz from the 40s and 50s and tuvan throatsinging, yet it sounds nothing at all like that. These days the new NILE and the new BEHEMOTH is spinning a lot on my Ipod as well as a lot of ROOT(czech)

> 11. Are there any other projects going on these days besides 1349?
S: there are always things to do, this is however a 1349 interview so i dont feel the need to talk about anything else.
I could ramble on about Pantheon I, Den Saakaldte, Tyrann, Dead Trooper, Satyricon and all the other bands that people from 1349 are in but it seems like a waste of the readers time.

12. What role does Satanism or Occultism play in the music?
S: In the music itself these things can only be vaguely felt in the overall mood, lyrically you can read more into it. The tritones and disharmonies are everywhere though, making this music officially satanic by ancient christian music rules.

> 13. What are some of your interests outside of music?
S: There is not much besides music, except literature, movies, alcohol and video games.

> 14. Any final words or thoughts?
