Demonomancy was founded in 2008 when all the original members were very young and wanted to play tribute to the music they loved and listened to daily. We started playing covers of our favorite bands, such as SLAUGHTER, SARCOFAGO and VON. Once we refined our ability of playing cruel metal of death, we started composing songs of our own. As our career progressed, the desire of making our sound as unique and recognizable as possible became more and more intense, and it’s now our priority.
2. In February you have a new album coming out, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from the stuff you have released in the past?
We strongly believe that Poisoned Atonement is our best material so far. It represents all we ever wanted to obtain musically and lyrically, and it took a long time to achieve that. As opposed to our previous releases, we managed to include a much wider range of influences in this new album, which makes it a lot more multi-faced. I would say that the main difference compared to our past releases is this will to overcome the pre-set genre-specific boundaries in order to create something truly unique.
3.Your lyrics cover a lot of satanic, occult and blasphemous themes, can you tell us a little bit more about your interest in the dark arts?
We are actually not particularly interested in those themes. although in the past, especially in the first album, we covered themes such as occultism and numerology, we didn't really go deep in them or kept including them consistently, as we've always dealt with them from a personal point of view rather than academically. We would much rather write about what inspires us, which is constantly changing . The new album's lyrics are extremely personal and diverse, to the point that each of them would deserve its own explanation. However I find more fitting and intriguing to allow personal interpretation to the listener, considering the high level of abstraction in the lyrics. The album's title of choice manages to represent what all the lyrics have more or less in common, which is the idea of an unaccomplished redemption, a constant failure to perfect the self.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Demonomancy'?
It is undeniably inspired by Beherit’s legendary demo, an important influence to our sound. However, it's meaning is crucial to describe our music: it is defined as “divination through the summoning of demons.” In a way, this is what we do with this band. We look for sounds and themes that can touch the abyss and dig down to the most hidden areas of the material world, so that we can better understand ourselves and the reality surrounding us.
5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played over the years and also how would you describe your stage performance?
Our experience in the USA playing at Martyrdom Fest 2015 will be extremely hard to forget. Our 3 performances at Nuclear War Mow! Fest (2012, 2014 and 2016 editions) are also more than worthy of mention!
6.Do you have any touring or show plans once the new album is released?
Yes, a European tour for the release of the new album, and we are sure more opportunities will arise this year.
7.The new album is coming out on 'Invictus Productions;, how would you compare working with them to your previous label 'Nuclear War Now! productions'?
We are fans of both labels, the two of them are extremely professional. Our initial intention was to work with both to split the new album’s production between Europe and the US. Unfortunately that was not possible, so we had to choose the European market.
8.In 2016 you where also a part of a split with 'Witchcraft', what are your thoughts of the other band that had participated on the recording?
We have been in touch with the Finnish devils for many years now, writing back to each other using paper letters. For a long time we wanted to do this split, and it finally came to be!
9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black and death metal?
We think we are well known on American soil, most likely because of our previous collaboration with NWN. In Europe we are usually a good surprise for a good percentage of those who see us live, although it’s all more competitive. We are confident that it will all change for the better under Invictus.
10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
Higher and higher, one milestone at a time.
11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
Literally ALL metal. We are not the kinds of listeners who only focus on a handful of genres and end up limiting themselves to emulation. Anything will listen to can be a possible source of influence, from BLACK SABBATH, to MANOWAR to NUCLEAR DEATH.
