Deuil/Shock/Deny/ConSouling Sounds/2015 CD Review

  Deuil  are  a  band  from  Belgium  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  mixture  of  post  black  metal,  sludge  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2015  album  "Shock/Deny"  which  was  released  by  ConSouling  Sounds.

  A  very  distorted  drone  and  chants  start  off  the  album  before  adding  in  a  heavy  bass  guitar  sound  and  whispers  and  once  the  guitars  kick  in  the  music  goes  for  more  of  a  sludge  style  along  with  some  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  and  post  metal  style  melodies  and  both  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Elements  of  modern  atmospheric  black  metal  can  be  heard  throughout t he  recording  while  the  fast  parts  bring  in  a  more  raw  take  of  the  genre  along  with  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  that  also  add  in  a  Cascadian  feeling  at  times   while  the  solos  and  leads  are  very  distorted  and  melodic  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  the  music  also  brings  in  elements  of  ambient  into  some  parts  of  the  songs  and  a  brief  use  of  spoken word  parts  are  brought  onto  the  last  track.

  Deuil  creates  another  recording  that  takes  a  very  modern  and  atmospheric  style  of  post  black  metal  and  mixes  in  some  of  the  darkness  and  heaviness  of  sludge  and  doom  as  well  as  mixing  in  traces  of  ambient  and  drone  to  create  a  very  heavy  and  dark  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  angry  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Deuil  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  black  metal  and  sludge,  you  should  enjoy  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED TRACK  "Deny".  8  out  of  10.

Deuil Interview

1.Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?

Yep, we are a four pieces band hailing from Liège in Belgium. We've started this project in the middle of 2012, at the beginning we were 3 guys involved and this project and we have recorded our first concept album  « Acceptance/Rebuild » some month later. In the beginning of 2013 one of our friends wanted to try the bass in the band and finally we have continued with him so we recorded again this album with the bass track and now it's going to be released as a LP in the next few days.

2.How would you describe your musical sound?

I would say it's a mix between sludge, doom and black metal/ blackgaze with in addition some post rockish landscapes. People usually say we play something called « Blackened sludge » even if I didn't know this term before.

3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

The concept behind the music and lyrics is the exploration of the feelings you can get after the loss of someone. « Acceptance/Rebuild » tries to express these emotions you can feel during the two last levels of this mourning process.

4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Deuil?

Deuil is just the french translation of mourning


5.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?

I think every show is different because of the atmosphere but we always try set an intimistic or maybe even a sad ambiance up during our shows. We are definitely not that kind of band that will jump around or even play face to face to the audience. I think it can be boring if you don't know what is the concept behind Deuil but we coudn't play our tracks live in a different way than in an intimist one.

6.Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?

Yes since we release our LP we'll play some shows, for the end of 2013 we have a bunch of gigs planned in Belgium, France and Germany and we also plan a tour in April 2013 in Europe.
We would love to play and tour much but it's actually quiet difficult with our professional/student life's.




7.The ep came out on Lost Pilgrim Records, how did you get in contact with this label and also how would you describe the support they have given you so far?

We have contacted Lost Pilgrims records because everyone of us really like their previous releases (especialy the Rorcal one) and we though it could be cool to work with Geraud.
They gave us a lot of support in the LP but (and it was more than expected) also in merch printing and help for our next tour. I've never met Geraud but I'm really looking forward to meet him in the real life !!!


8.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal and sludge?

I really don't know since we release our LP on 12 different labels it's pretty hard to say what feedback everyone gets. As a band I think we get such good feedbacks with the nice reviews and words we often get, lot of people seem to be interested in what we do and lot of people download or help us with buying merch on bandcamp.
Anyway since we are not playing just black metal or sludge I can understand some people don't like us and I think we are just one more band in the ocean (even if we are just one more band in the ocean hahaha).

9.Are there any other musical projects besides this band?

Our drummer plays in a noise band calle Wyatt E. And the 3 other are just focused on Deuil.

10.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?

We continue to explore the mourning process levels and try to express them with our music.
We are actually working on the next release, one song is already almost finished (we just have to add some samples and fix some lyrics problems) and I'm writing the second one.

11.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?

The cool thing is our drummer is a big fan of black metal, from pagan to depressive black metal. I'm not really into black metal, I'm more into sludge, doom or even ambient music. The cool thing is the combination, the communion we get when we try new things together. Sometimes it sounds really weird but sometimes it sounds really interesting too.


12.Outside of music what are some of your interests?

We all have different interests our bass player and singer are huge fans of video games and comics, I'm a little bit into video games too but I'm a huge fan of history and our drummer just listen to music all the time. We also often meet to hang out with bad beers at shows or at home.



13.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?

Deuil/Acceptance/Rebuild/Lost Pilgrim Records/2013 EP Review

  Deuil are  a  band  from  Belgium  that  plays  a  mixture  of  atmospheric  black metal, sludge  and  doom metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2013  ep  "Acceptance/Rebuild"  which  was  released by  Lost  Pilgrim  Records.

  "Acceptance"  opens  up  with  some  avant  garde  chants  before  adding  in  some  dark  and  heavy  guitar  riffs  and  a  minute  later  drums  start  to  kick  in  along  with  some  aggressive  screams  shortly  after  that,  as  the  song  moves  on  it  starts  adding  in  some  drone  in  certain  sections  and  a  few  minutes  later  the  music  speeds  up  with  some  fast  black  metal  guitar  riffs  and  blast  beats  for  a  couple of  minutes  and  then  going  into  a  more  mid  paced  direction  along  with  some  powerful  bass  guitars  before  alternating  between  slow,  fast  and  mid  paced  parts  which  also  leads  up  to  some  doom  metal  style  riffing  making  its  presence  known  in  the  song  along  with  some  dark  sounding  melodies.

  "Rebuild"  begins  with  some  weird  clean  singing  and  a  few  seconds  alter dark  and  heavy  guitar  riffs  slowly  start  coming  in  along  with  some  drums  and  bass  guitars  a few  seconds  later  and  you  can  also  hear  some  melody  in  the  guitar  riffing  and  towards  the  end  black  metal  guitar  riffs,  blast  beats and  depressive  screams  come  into  the  music  for  a  few  seconds

  Song  lyrics  cover  dark  and  melancholy  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  strong,  powerful,  heavy  and  dark  sound  to  it  with  both  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  Deuil  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  atmospheric  black  metal,  doom  and  sludge  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  band.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Acceptance".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
