1. Can you tell us a little bit about the band for those that have never heard of you before?
1. Heron formed out ov the ashes of a couple different music projects. Logan had played in a few more traditional raw styled bm bands with our drummer Jordan. I had just quit a noisegrind band and was bumming around trying to find someone who could pull off nasty blasts, and Chris Walls our organist had been floating around the music scene here in Raleigh playing in sludgey/doom outfits. We all knew each other through friends or from shows so we came together in the fall of 2012 to try to cohesively blend our individual styles and use this as a vessel to channel deep-seated roots of depression that we all are forced to deal with on a daily basis.
2.How would you describe your musical sound?
2. It's a mix between the primal intensiveness of playing dissonant notes at extreme speeds creating the aura of chaos and the structured melody of order. It's almost like trying to symbolically represent the duality ov human nature by going from one extreme to another. In that way each song is a tribute to how quickly your mind reacts to change when put into an situation that calls for action.
3. What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
3. On the demo we stuck to a fairly typical transcendentalist approach, the song Let My Body Feed the Earth is basically about having overwhelming feelings ov worthlessness and guilt one experiences in their human form which inevitably leads to self-termination in the midst ov natural surroundings so that this body will be fed upon by the flora and fauna. With Ritual though, we went with a less specific direction instead putting our focus on ideas based on strange perspectives and scenes ov the natural world.
4. What is the meaning and inspiration behind the bands name?
4. Logan lives out in the woods ov Garner and behind his house is a huge lake where we would take walks before or after practice. So one ov the first times I went out there we made our way to the lake and lo and behold in the midst of our presence was this lone heron watching us make our approach. We sat down and watched it for a couple seconds before it took flight. We hadn't said anything during this event but we all knew that there was this feeling in each of us that no one could fully explain. I suppose the name itself is just a representation of that moment that we all experienced collectively.
5. What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and how would you describe your stage performance?
5. One ov the last ones we played actually at a BM fest in Charlotte organized by the Mysteriarch dudes. We got a great reception because this was one ov the few all BM band lineups we've played as opposed to house shows in Raleigh with punk/hardcore bands. When we play live we go into it with the mentality that the audience are a bunch ov worthless fucking vermin anyways so why cater to their needs when we can just play, be done with it, and just leave it at that. We're going to play the same regardless ov the audience being four pasty white kids with black tee-shirts on or 400 venom dripping sewer mutants that don't know blood from bile.
6. Do you have any touring or show plans for the future?
6. Possible tour in 2014 but for the rest ov the year we're going to be trying to write and record as much material as possible for a full-length release.
7. Currently you are unsigned, are you looking for a label or received any interest?
7. We have received offers but I attest to a DiY mentality and would prefer being in control ov what we put out by our own standards and definitions. That is not to say if the right offer came around we would say no, it's just all circumstantial.
8. On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
8. I couldn't really say. We're not all that interested in what people think of us for better or for worse. Our only goal is to keep releasing music that is available worldwide and to make money off the fools who send it to us for these releases. The rest is inconsequential.
9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
9. I can see just by the past few songs we've written that they are becoming more thought out and complex. Since we will be doing strictly recordings for the next couple months I can definitely see a greater use ov atmosphere and drone being used to compliment the harshness and extending our borders ov both ends of the spectrum. There really are endless possibilities as we will use any instrument we can get our hands on not to mention ones we can create.
10.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
10. We take much inspiration with our sound from the work of Angelo Badalamenti, the composer for the Twin Peaks soundtrack. Then of course there's bands like Krallice, Weakling, WTTR, Botanist among others. We all have a pretty varied taste in music, it's really all across the board, lately I myself have been blasting noise rock bands like Akimbo, Jesus Lizard, Arab on Radar etc. but then again it changes every day. Hell this playlist I'm listening to right now just changed from Nargaroth to Three Six Mafia to give you an idea.
11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
11. Drinking. Heavily.
