Widerwertig/Trager rostender Maschinerie/Negation Records/2014 Full Length Reviw

This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Widerwertig  with  the  music  this  time  going  for  more  of  an  instrumental  black  metal  sound  with  the  album  being  released  in  2014  by  Negation  Records  and  called  "Trager  rostender  Maschinerie".

The  album  starts out  with  a  distorted  and  melodic  sounding  depressive  black  metal  sound  which  also  brings  in  elements  of  experimental  rock  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  sound  very  powerful  sounding  and  after  a  couple  of  minutes  solos  and  leads  are  added  into  the  music  along  with  some  fast  parts  and  blast  beats.

When  the  album  goes  into  other  songs  the  music  goes  for  mostly  an  instrumental  black  metal  sound  with  no  vocals  being  utilized  this  time  around  along  with  a  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  adding  in  elements  of  old  school  and  raw  sounding  black  metal  along  with  a  crust  punk  edge  and  after  awhile  there  is  a  brief  use  of  clean  playing  before  returning  to  a  more  heavier  direction  and  on  the  last  track  elements  of  post  rock  are  added  into  the  recording.

With  this  album  Widerwertig  stay  away  from  vocals  and  go  for  more  of  an  instrumental  black  metal  sound  while  also  adding  in  melody  and  elements  of  experimental  rock  and  crust  to  create  their  own  sound  for  this  recording.

Song  lyrics  are  all  absent  from  this  recording  with  the  music  being  all  instrumental,  while  the  production  has  a  very  raw  and  heavy  sound  where  you  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Widerwertig  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  instrumental  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Cutting  Ouroborus"  and  "Vualkhorna".  8  out  of  10.

Widerwertig/Lobotomie/2011 Full Length Review

Widerwertig  are  a  band  from  Germany  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  experimental  form  of  depressive  black  metal  with  elements  of  punk  rock  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2011  album  "Lobotomie".

The  album  starts  out  with  a  very  lo-fi  and  raw  black  metal  sound  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  a  few  seconds  depressive  screams  kick  in  along  with  a  mixture  of  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  after  awhile  melody  is  added  into  certain  parts  of  the  recording.

When  we  get  more  into  the  album  elements  of  punk  rock  are  mixed  in  with  the  more  raw  and  depressive  black  metal  parts  of  the  recording  and  at  time s clean  guitars  are  added  into  the  music  briefly  before  returning  to  a  heavier  direction  and  on  one  of  the  tracks  the  bass  guitars  sound  very  powerful.

With  this  recording  Widerwertig  played  a  more  raw  and  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  while t hey  do  bring  in  a  small  amount  of  punk  and  experimental  elements  they  did  not utilize  them  as  much  until  later  releases,  but  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  depressive  black  metal  recording.

Song  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  German  and  English  and  cover  dark,  depressive  and  philosophical  themes,  while  the  production h as  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  along  with  some  of  the  tracks  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Widerwertig  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  raw  depressive  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "SolEIA"  "TraumA"  and  "Senerade".  8  out  of  10.

Widerwertig Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before, can you tell us a little bit about the band?
We are three guys with three instruments. That means there is one instrument per guy (guitar, bass and drums, a very special constellation). We started making music four years ago and produced three albums, two of them are already available and one is in production and will be released in a few weeks. During the time in which we were writing our first album, we were two guys, but then a third guy appeared. Fortunately he has not disappeared until now.
2.How would you describe your musical sound?
We try to build up a dark atmosphere to destroy this atmosphere with other elements (punk, psychedelic, sparkling unicorn fights ...) in order to produce something bizarre. For us, it is important to mix very deep feelings with elements which might seem to not fit in totally.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?
Sometimes we take passages from books (burroughs, nietzsche, freud..), sometimes we could not resist the urge to write about meaningless philosophical topics. There are also songs we just tried to imitate animal sounds (dying pigs, screaming goats..) The new album will have no vocals.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name Widerwertig?
It is a wordplay because in germany "widerwärtig" with the letter "ä" is the german word for "disgusting". "Wider" means something like "against" and "wertig" refers somehow to "values". We know it is not possible to be against social values, it is just a try to stand for a critical view on morality (the only problem is, the more you are outside, the more you are inside). Therefore you can´t reduce our philosophy to nihilism, but if you want to, you can reduce it to sparkling unicorns.
5.Has the band done any live shows or is this a studio project?
We had a few live shows in our area. Because of our upcoming album release we plan some other shows.
6.The new album came out on Negation Records, can you tell us a little bit more about this label?
It is a recently founded label to support the local underground scene. There are a few other projects which release there, also some black metal projects like "Flagellant". The label has no focus on a specific genre.
7.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?
The eastern hemisphere seems to like our music, especially the chinese one. The russian black metal community has been teared apart into the ones who like us and the others who do not. today there is a big war between them and we hope no one gets hurt because of our music. In the future there will be another big war about if this statement is true or not.We would like to get more feedback from america, because there are great bands.
8.Are there any other musical projects besides this band?
In the past there was the project "miriquidi eremit", a mixture of post rock and punk. We also make music together in other constellations and perhaps there will be releases in the future. For example there will be a split beat tape from "cap farewell" and "onkel jutter king".
9.What direction do you see your music heading into on future releases?
We will stick to our way of permutating our style slightly while we are always trying to approach our idea(l) of music.
10.What are some bands or musical styles that have influenced your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
The bands which influenced our music are still the bands we are listening to today. there are bands like "paysage d'hiver", "Gris", "Bone awl", "Porcupine Tree", "Pyramids", "Randy Newman", "Wu-Tang-Clan", "Beach House" and "Aphex Twin", the usual stuff.
11.Outside of music what are some of your interests?
Searching for food in trash cans, fighting homophobia, thinking about the structure of social existence, truck driving, physics. We also like to sleep in the woods and drink alcohol.
12.Any final words or thoughts before we wrap up this interview?
We like racoons and we hope to see some soon. There are not many in germany but they become more. And finally we want to thank god for all that oxygen in the air around, because without all that oxygen we believe we would probably suffocate very slowly which certainly would mean a painful death... We want thank you for your interest in our music and for this interview.
We apologzse that it took so long until we answered!

"Vespera"  has  its  start  with  acoustic  guitars  and  drums  and  a  few  seconds  alter  heavy  and  melodic  sounding  guitar  riffs  kick  in  which  also  lead  to  some  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  powerful  bass  guitars  and  halfway  through  the  song  there  is  a  brief  use  of  fast  playing  along  with  some  blast  beats.

Song  lyrics  are  written  in  a  mixture  of  English  and  German  and  cover  dark  themes,  while  the  production  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording  along  with  some  of  the  songs  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.
