Cara Neir/Venowl/Broken Limbs Recordings/2014 Split EP Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  ep  between  Texas's  Care  Neir  and  Illinois's  Venowl  which  will  be  released  in  October  by  Broken  Limb  Recordings  with  both  bands  having  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Cara  Neir  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  melodic  crust  punk.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  off  with  a  fast  and  raw  black  metal  sound  along  with  some  blast  beats  and  high  p[itched  screams  before  adding  in  some  melodic  riffing  which  adds  in  more  of  a  crust  and  post  metal  feeling  to  their  musical  sound  along  with  a  good  mixture  of  clean  and  heavy  playing.

  You  can  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording,  on  the  second  track  a  small  amount  of  clean  singing  is  added  into  the  music  along  with  a  small  amount  of  drones  towards  the  end  of  the  song  and  they  bring  back  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  style  on  the  last  track.

  Cara  Neir  remains  true  to  their  mixture  of  raw  black  metal  and  melodic  crust  punk  on  their  side  of  the  recording  as  well  as  adding  in  more  elements  of  post  rock  this  time  around,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  philosophical  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Cara  Neir  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  band,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Pitiful  Human  Beings".

  Next  up  is  Venowl  a  band  that  plays  a  mixture of  black  metal,  doom  and  noise.

  Their  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  an  ambient  drone  sound  before  adding  in  some  bass  guitars  which  leads  up  to  more  of  a  doom  metal direction  along  with  some  high  pitched  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  the  song  is  divided  into  2  different  parts  and  after  10  minutes  more  reverb  and  distortion  are  added  into  their  music.

  Venowl  go  more  into  a  doom  metal  direction  this  time  around  while  still  having  a  good  amount  of  black  metal  in  the  vocals  and  they  cut  back  on  the  noise  influences  of  previous  recordings  to  create  a  song  that  is  very  dark,  slow  and  over  20  minutes  and  the  production  has  a  very  dark  sound  with  all  of  the  music  being  recorded  live.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  tack  from  Venowl  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  and  doom  metal,  you  should  check  out  their  song.

  In  conclusion  i  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  doom  and  crust  you  should  add  this  recording  to  your  collection.  8  out  of  10.

Venowl/Vaba Marat/Sanctum Abyss/2012 Split Cassette Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  cassette  between  Illinois's  Venowl  and  Brazil''s  Vaba  Marat  which  was  released  by  Sanctum  Abyss  and  we  will  start  of  the  review  with  Venowl  which  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal,  doom  and  noise  on  this  recording.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized at  times,  while  the  bass  playing  has  a  very  strong  and  powerful  sound  with  heavy  riffing  that  dominates  throughout  their  song.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  riffs  that  combine  fast  black  metal,  drone,  doom  and  noise  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  their  side  of  the  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  heavy,  raw  and  primitive  sound  while  you  can  still  hear  all  of  the   musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  their  song.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  song  from  Venowl  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal,  drone,  doom  and  noise,  you  should  check  out  their  side  of  the  recording.  RECOMMENDED.

  Next  up  is  Vaba  Marat  which  plays  a  mixture  of  raw  black  metal,  noise  and  punk.

  Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming,  while  the  rhythm  guitars  combine  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  with  harsh  noise  and  punk  to  create  a  sound  of their  own  with  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  being  present  on  their  song.

  Vocals  are  all  grim  sounding  and  high  pitched  black  metal  screams,  while the  lyrics  are  written  in their  native  tongue  and  cover  dark  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  loud,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to it.

  In  my  opinion  Vaba  Marat  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  raw  black  metal,  noise  and  punk with  the  best  song  on  this  cassette  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  check  out  their  song.  RECOMMENDED.

   In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to all  fans  of  black  metal,  drone,  doom,  noise  and  punk.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Venowl/Marsh/A Terre Recordings/2010 Split Cassette Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  project with  Illinois's Venowl  and Minnesota's  Marsh   teaming  together  to  create  a  hybrid  of  black  metal  and  harsh  noise  which  was  released  by  A  Terre  Recordings  in  2010.

  Noise  effects  bring  the  harsh  noise  and  drone  elements  to  the  music,  while  the  lead  guitars  are  all  very  raw  and  primitive  sounding  riffs  that  combine  raw  black  metal  but  are  not  utilized  as  much  as  the  noise  parts.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  black  metal/harsh  noise  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occultism,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  harsh,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  only  2  songs  present.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  ep  from  Venowl  and  Marsh  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal  and  harsh  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  split.  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

Venowl/[::]/2010 Cassette Review

  This  is  a  review  of  another  recording  from  Venowl  which  continues  their  hybrid  of  black  metal,  doom  and  noise  with  the  cassette  being  self  released  in  2010  and  called  "[::]".

  Drums  range  from  slow  to  mid paced  playing  with  no  fast  drumming  or  blast  beats  being  present  on  this  recording  with  them  only  being  used  briefly  since  the  music  focus'es  more  on  noise,  while  the  sound  effects  bring  elements  of  harsh  noise  to  the  recording  and  there  is  no  use  of  a  bass  guitar  present  on  this  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  when  they  are  utilized  are  slow  to  mid  paced  riffs  that   combine  black  metal,  drone,  doom,  experimental  and  noise  together  to  create  a  sound  of  their  own  but  the  noise  parts  are  more  dominant  than  the  other  instruments  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  black  metal/harsh  noise  themes,  while  the  lyrics  cover  darkness  and  occult  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  harsh,  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  some  of  the  songs  being  long  and  epic  in  length.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  cassette  from  Venowl  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black metal  mixed  with  doom  and  harsh  noise,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Invockkation  Of  The  Spheres  That  Blacken  Portant"  and  "The  Scrawls  Of Wyrd-Laden  Knives".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.

  Venowl  are  a  band  from  Chicago,  Illinois  that  plays  a  mixture  of   raw  black  metal  and  noise  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  self  released  2009  cassette  "Juldoriion".

Drums  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  drumming  with  some  blast  beats  being  utilized,  while  the  sound  effects  bring  harsh  noise  sounds  to  the  music  and  there  is  no  use  of  a  bass  on  this  recording.

  Rhythm  guitars  range  from  slow,  mid  paced  to  fast  black  metal  riffs  that  are  very  raw  and  primitive  sounding  black  metal  riffs  with  some  drone  doom  metal elements  when  they  are  utilized  but  for  the  most  part  are  kind  of  hard  to  hear  and  there  are  no  guitar  solos  or  leads  present  on  this  recording.

  Vocals  are  all  high  pitched  black  metal/noise  screams,  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  violent  themes,  as  for  the  production  it  has  a  very  dark,  raw  and  primitive  sound  to  it  with  the  songs  being  short.

  In  my  opinion  Venowl  are  a  very  great  sounding  hybrid  of  raw  black  metal  and  harsh  noise  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  cassette.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Regrets  And  Melancholy  In  A  Field  Of  Silent"  and  "Slaughtered  And  Defeated  In  A  Tree".  RECOMMENDED  BUY.
