Defuntos/Vidas Vazias... Alamas Perdidas.../War Productions/2016 Cassette Re-Issue Review

  Defuntos  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  has  been  featured  before  in  this  zine  and  plays a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal  and  doom  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2012  album  "Vidas  Vazias... Alamas  Perdidas..."  which  was  re-issued  in  2016  on cassette  by  War  Productions.

  Female  vocals  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  clean  playing  is  added  onto  the  recording  along  with  some  drum  beats  as  well  as  some  grim  black  metal  screams  which  also  use  a  rough  yet  melodic  tone  at  times  and  a  great  portion  of  the  songs  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  after  awhile  more  depressive  elements  are  added  onto  the  recording.

  A  great  amount  of  doom  metal  influences  can  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the recording  and  most  of  the  songs  are  done  with  clean  guitars  instead  of  heavier  riffs  while  still  being  very  dark,  depressive  and  grim  sounding  and  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  this  recording and  all  of  the  tracks  stick  to  a  very  slow  musical  direction.

  Defuntos  create  something  very  different  with  this  recording  taking  a  depressive  form  of  black  metal  and  mixing  it  in  with  elements  of  doom  metal  while  also  avoiding  any  heavy  and  distorted  guitars,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  suffering,  sorrow,  and  longing  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  depressive  black  metal  and  doom,  you  should  check  out  this  re-issue.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  "II"  and  "V".  8  out  of  10.

Defuntos/A Eterna Danca da Morte/Dunkelheit Produktionen/2016 CD Review

  Defuntos  are  a  band  from  Portugal  that  plays  a  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  album  "A  Eterna  Danca  da  Morte"  which  was  released  by  Dunkelheit  Produktionen.

Spoken  word  parts  and  tragic  sounding  pianos  start  off  the  album  and  after  the  intro  the  music  goes into  more  of  a  heavier  funeral  doom  metal  direction  along  with  some  grim  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  all  of  the  musical  instruments  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them and  most  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Melodies  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  riffing  and  the  songs  stick  to  mostly  a  slow  or  mid  paced  musical  direction  with  no  blast  beats  or  fast  riffs  ever  being  utilized  and  the  music  also  gets  atmospheric  at  times  while  the  bass  guitars  is  a  lead  instrument  on  the  recording  and  they  also  avoid  the  use  of  traditional  guitars  and  one  song  also  brings  in  melodic  chants.

  Defuntos  plays  a  musical  style  that  takes  depressive  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  mixes  them together  to  create  a  very  dark  sounding  recording,  the  production  sounds  very  dark  and  raw  while  the  lyrics  cover  death,  suffering,  longing  and  sorrow  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Defuntos are  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  depressive  black  metal  and  funeral  doom  metal  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  duo.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "A  Vigila  Funebre"  "Mortuaria  Procissao"  and  "No  Encalco  da  Lua  negra".  8  out  of  10.
