Karg/Marodeur/AOP Records/2025 Full Length Review

 

  Austria's  Karg  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal with  elements  from  other  musical  genres  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2025  album  "Marodeur"  which  will  be  released  in  April  by  AOP  Records.

  A  very  atmospheric  shoegazre  orientated  sound  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  clean  playing  and  synths  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction  which  also  adds  in  a  touch  of  grunge  rock.  Vocals  are  mostly  angry  sounding  black  metal  screams  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  Some  of  the  more  melancholic  sides  of  the  music  are  heavily  rooted  in  post-punk  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style  along  with  some  angry  shouts  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  When  the  music speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  as  well  as  some  clear  vocals  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  album,  some  of  the  tracks  also  add  in  movie  samples,  violins  and  pianos.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  the  melancholic  side  of  life.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Karg  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Schnee  ist  das  Blut  der  Geister'  "Annapurna"  and  "Anemoia".  8  out  of  10.

Karg/Resignation/AOP Records/2022 Full Length Review

 

  Austria's   Karg  have  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  an  atmospheric  style  of  post  black  metal  with  elements  of  post  punk,  grunge  and  shoegaze  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2022  album  "Resignation"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  AOP  Productions.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  along  with  some  synths  a  few  seconds  later  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  and  also  mixes  in  with  the  heavier  sections  of t he  songs.  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  post  metal  style.

  Vocals  are  mostly  done  in  an  angry  black  metal  style  while  the  music  also  brings  in a  great  amount  of  shoegaze  elements.  The  riffs  also  ad d in  a  lot  of  melody  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  adding  in  some  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling.

  Stringed  instruments  and  acoustic  guitars  can  also  be  heard  on  a  few  tracks  along  with  some  clear  vocals  also  being  added  into  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Touches  of  post  punk  and  grunge  can  also  be  heard  at  times  as  well  as  a  couple  of  songs  also  bringing  in  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts.

  Throughout  the  album  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  towards  the  end  they  also  add  in  a  cover  of  Nothing's  "Fieberherz".  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  and  cover  melancholy,  broken  relationships,  lost  love,  estrangement  drug  abuse,  loss,  suicidal  thoughts  and  depression  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Karg  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Was  blebt"  and  "Generation  ohne  Abschied".  8  out  of  10.

Karg/Traktat/AOP Records/2020 CD Review

  Karg  is  a  solo  project  from  Austria  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  post  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of his  2020  album  "Traktat"  which  will  be  released  on  February  7th  by  AOP  Records.

  Clean  playing  starts  off  the  album  while  also  introducing  elements  of  post  rock  onto  the  recording.  The  riffs  also  add  in  a  great  amount  of  melody  along  with  the  vocals  being  mostly  angry  yet  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  shoegaze  style.

  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  recording  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  decent  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and   epic  in  length  as  well  as  some  spoken word  parts  also  being  added  into  some  parts  of  the  recording.  Some  songs  also  add  in  grunge  and  post  punk  influences  along  with  some  tracks  also  adding  in  a  small  amount  of  clean  vocals,  violins  are  also  brought  into  some  parts  of  the  album  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  brief  use  of  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  a  dialect  spoken  near  the  Tennen  Mountains  in  Austria  and  cover  melancholy,  depression,  suicide  and  drug  abuse  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  album  from  Karg  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  post  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  recording.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Irgendjemand  wartet  immer"  "Alaska"  "Grabcholerik"  and  "Nichts  als  Schatten".  8  out  of  10.

Karg/Dornerivogel/AOP Records/2018 CD Review

  Karg  are  a  band  from  Austria  that  plays  a  very  atmospheric  form  of  post  black metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2018  album  "Dornerivogel"  which  will  be  released  in  November  by  AOP  Records.

  Acoustic  guitar  playing  starts  off  the  album  which  is  also  mixed  into  the  heavier  sections  of  the  music  at  times  along  with  some  post  rock  and  shoegaze  elements  also  being  used  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  while  the  vocals  are  mostly  depressive  black  metal  screams  and  the  solos  and  leads  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  also  use  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  feeling  along  with  all  of  the  musical  instruments  having  a  very  powerful  sound  to them  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts as  well  as  the  riffs  also  utilizing  a  lot  of  melody,  clean  playing  and  ambient  elements  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  and  one  track  also  introduces  spoken  word  parts  onto  the  recording  and  as  the  album  progresses  clean  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly.

  Karg  plays  a  style  of  post  black  metal  that  is  very  atmospheric  along  with  a  great  amount  of  shoegaze  elements,  the  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  German  ans  cover  aspiration,  depression  and  self  destruction  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Karg  are  a  very  great  sounding  atmospheric  post  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Drangsal"  "L'appel  du  vide"  and  "Advent".  8  out  of  10.
