Druadan Forest/Dismal Spells Part 2 - The Night Circus/Werewolf Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Finland's  solo  project  Druadan  Forest  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  being  less  black  metal  influenced  than  previous  releases  and  focuses  more  on  a mixture  of  dungeon  synth  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "Dismal  Spells  Part  2  -  The  Night  Circus"  which  will  be  released  on  February  23rd   by  Werewolf  Records.

  Epic  sounding  synths  start  off  the  album  also  brings  in  elements  of  dungeon  synth  and  ambient  while  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  and  the  song  also  add  in  a  good  amount  of  programmed  beats.

  Most  of  the  tracks  are  also  instrumentals  while  the  music  also  captures  a  very  medieval  orientated  atmosphere  at  times.  Distorted  sounds  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording  along  with  each  song  also  bringing  in  a  different  sound.

  On  this  recording  Druadan  Forest  brings  in  a  very  epic  and  medieval  mixture  of  dungeon  synth  and  ambient  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Druadan  Forest  and  if  you  are  a f an  of  ambient  and  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Moonlight  Sorcery"  "The  Devil's  Gate"  and  "Black  Towers  On  Kharanos".  8 out  of  10.

Druadan Forest/Portals/Werewolf Records/2022 CD Review

 

  Finland's  solo  project  Druadan  Forest  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  more  of  a  mixture  of  dungeon  synth  and  ambient  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  album  2022  "Portals"  which  will  be  released  on  January  28th    by  Werewolf  Records.

  Dark  soundscapes  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  ambient  style  synths  which  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Elements  of  dungeon  synth  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  along  with  the  music  also  having  its  cosmic  moments  and  most  of  the  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  

  All  of  the  music  sticks  to  an  instrumental  direction  while  each  song  also  sounds  very  different  from  each  other.  One  of  the  songs  also  introduces  field  recordings  into  the  music  along  with  the  music  also  showing  some  influences  from  the  90's  era  as  well  as  getting  very  atmospheric  sounding  at  times.

  On  this  recording  Druadan  Forest  stays  away  from  the  black  metal  elements  of  previous  releases  and  focuses  more  on  a  mixture  of  cosmic  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  as  well  as  keeping  everything  instrumental  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Druadan  Forest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  cosmic  ambient  and  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "In  Between  Transcendence  And  True  Endless  Sleep"  and  "Paint  My  Demons  Black".  8  out  of  10.

Druadan Forest/Old Sorcery/Werewolf Records/2021 Split Album Review

 

  This  is  a  review  of  a  split  album  between  Finland's  Druadan  Forest  and  Old  Sorcery  which  will  be  released  in  February  by  Werewolf  Records  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Druadan  Forest  a  solo  project  that h as  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  focuses  less  on  the  black  metal  side  of  his  recordings  and  goes  into  more  of  a  pure  dungeon  synth  direction.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  field  recordings  before  going  into  more  of  a  dungeon  synth  direction  which  also  adds  in  some  touches  of  ambient.  Both  of  his  tracks  are  also  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  also  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  along  with  the  synths  also  utilizing  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.

  Programmed  beats  can  also  be  heard  at  times  while  the  spoken  word  parts  when  they  are  utilized  also  give  the  songs  more  of  a  narrative  style  along  with  some  nature  sounds  also  being  added  on  the  second  track  which  also  sounds  very  different  from  the  first  song  while  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Druadan  Forest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  fantasy  orientated  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Pale  Sorcery  Of  The  Endless  Moon.

  Next  up  is  Old  Sorcery  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth  but  focuses  more  on  the  later  mentioned  genre  with  his  side  of  the  split.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  synths  that  also  mix  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  together  while  also  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Both  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  music  captures  the  atmosphere  of  both  a  horror  and  fantasy  movie  soundtrack.

  Touches  of  the  90's  era  dungeon  synth  style  can  also  be  heard  in  some  parts  of  the  recording  along  with  some  spoken  word  parts  and  whispers  also  being  added  into  certain  parts  of  the  music.  The  music  also  has  is  atmospheric  and  epic  moments  as  well  as  both  tracks  also  sounding  very  different  from  each  other  while  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Old  Sorcery  are  a  very  great  sounding  dungeon  synth  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Of  Dragon's  Blood".

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  dungeon  synth.  8  out  of  10.

Bannwald/Uruk-Hai/Druadan Forest/Kingdoms Long Gone/Antiq/2020 3 Way Split Album Review

  This  is  a  review  of  a  3  way  split  album  between  France's  Bannwald,  Austria's  Uruk-Hai  and  Finland's  Druadan  Forest  called  "Kingdoms  Long  Gone"  which  will  be  released  in  February,  2020  by  Antiq  and  we  will  start  off  the  review  with  Bannwald  a  solo  project  that  plays  dungeon  synth.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts out  with  a  very  medieval  dungeon  synth  style  while  all  of  his  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  The  synths  also  bring  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  while  also  adding  in  some  elements  of  dark  ambient  and  neo-classical  as  well  as  adding  in  a  good  amount  of  programmed  beats.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  sound  very  different  from  each  other  along  with  the  music  also  sounding  very  tribal  at  times  as  well  as  capturing  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack.  The  closing  track  is  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  production  also  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  Bannwald  are  a  very  great  sounding  dungeon  synth  solo  project  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Kingdom  Long  Gone".

  Next  up  is  Uruk-Hai  who  moves  away  from  the  ambient  style  of  black  metal  of  previous  releases  to  focus  more  on  a  dungeon  synth  style.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  programmed  yet  militant  beats  while  all  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic in  length.At  times  his  music  also  gets  a  little  bit  more  experimental  than  most  artists  of  this  genre  as  well  as  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  dungeon  synth  elements.

  The  synths  also  add  in  touches  of  dark  ambient  along  with  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.  Both  of  his  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  also  sound  very  different  from  each  other  while  also  both  of  them  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  instrumental,  the  closing  track  also  adds  in  a  small  amount  of  guitars  while  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  Uruk-Hai  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon synth,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Orkish  Hymn".

  Next  up  is  Druadan  Forest  who  also  moves  away  from  an  ambient  style  of  black  emtal  to  focus  more  on  a  dungeon  synth  style.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts  out  with  some  atmospheric  sounding  drones  while  his  track  is  over  19  minutes  in  length.  Spoken  word  parts  are  also  added  into  some  parts  of  the  track  along  with  the  song  also  mixing  in  a  great  amount  of  dungeon  synth  elements  and  the  synths  also  add  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys.

  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  along  with  the  synths  also  adding  in  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  and  the  music  also  adds  in  a  decent  amount  of  programmed  beats.  The  music  also  captures  a  very  medieval  atmosphere   while  the  production  also  sounds  very  professional

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Druadan  Forest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  dungeon  synth,  you  should  check  out  his  side  of  the  split.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  ambient  black  metal  and  dungeon  synth.  8  out  of  10.

  Druadan  Forest  are  a  solo  project  from  Finland  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  plays  an  epic  mixture  of  black  metal,  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Dismal  Spells  From  The  Dragonrealm"  which  will  be  released  in  September  by  Werewolf.

  Synths  start  off  the  album  and  they  are  also  very  heavily  rooted  in  the  dungeon  synth  as  well  as  using  a  variety  of  many  different  sounding  keys  style  while  all  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length.  Elements  of  ambient  can  also  be  heard  quite  a  bit  throughout  the  recording  and  most  of  the  music  is  dominated  by  synths.

  At  times  the  music  also  captures  the  atmosphere  of  a  fantasy  movie  soundtrack  while  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  in  certain  sections  of  the  recording.  Some  parts  of  the  music  also  bring  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  as  well  as  some  nature  sounds  also  being  utilized  at  times.

  On  this  Druadan  Forest  plays  a  mixture  of  black  metal,  dungeon  synth,  and  dark  ambient  to  create  a  sound  of  his  own.  The  production  sounds  very  dark  while  the  lyrics  cover  Fantasy  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  from  Druadan  Forest  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  black  metal, dungeon  synth  and  dark  ambient  and  if  you  are  a fan  of  those  musical genres,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Unsung  Spell  Of  No  Solace"  and  "No  Stars  Upon  The  Black  Sea  Of  Macrocosm".  8  out  of  10.

  His  side  of  the  split  starts out  with  some  programmed  beats  before  adding  into  some  synths  which  also  bring  in  a  mixture  of  dark  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  while  his  track  is  also more  than  20  minutes  in  length  along  with  the  music  being mostly instrumental  and  after  awhile  nature  sounds  and  spoken  word  parts  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  the  production  sounds  very  dark.

  In  my  opinion  The  True  Werwolf  is  a  very  great  sounding  mixture  of  black  ambient  and  dungeon  synth  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  those  musical  genres,  you  should  check  out  this  solo  project.

  Next  up  is  Druadan  Forest  a  solo  project  that  plays  a  mixture  of  epic  black  metal  and  ambient.

  In  conclusion  I  feel  this  is  a  very  great  sounding  split  and  I  would  recommend  it  to  all  fans  of  dungeon  synth  and  black  ambient.  8  out  of  10.
