Verwoed/The Mother/Wolves Of Hades/Argento Records/2024 Full Length Review

 

  Netherlands's  solo  project  Verwoed  has  returned  with  a  new  recording  which  shows  the  music  going  for  an  atmospheric  and  psychedelic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2024  album  "The  Mother"  which  will  be  released  in  March  as  a  joint  effort  between  Wolves  Of  Hades  and  Aregento  Records.

 Tribal  style  percussion  and  drums  start  off  the  album  along  with  some  folk  instruments  a  few  seconds  later  before  going  into  a  heavier  direction.  At  times  the  music  also  gets  very  psychedelic  and  atmospheric  sounding  while  clear  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing.

  Vocals  are  mostly  grim  sounding  black  metal  screams  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  also  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilzied  they  are  also  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  most  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast b eats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  Melodies  are  also  added  into  some  of  the  guitar  riffing  as  well  as  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  acoustic  guitars  and  clean  playing  can  also  be  heard  briefly  and  a  couple  of  tracks  are  also  instrumentals.  The  production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  cover  the  dark  night  of  the  soul.   

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Verwoed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  psychedelic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "The  mother"  and  "Death  in  A  Rosary".  8  out  of  10.

Verwoed/Da Val/Sentient Ruin Laboratories/Argento Records/Tattarus Tapes/2019 Full Length Review

  Verwoed  are  a  solo  project  from  the  Netherlands  that  has  had  music  reviewed  before  in  this  zine  and  on  this  recording  plays  a  very  psychedelic  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  his  2019  album  "Da  Val"  which  will  be  released  on  May  24th  as  a  joint  effort  between  Sentient  Ruin  Laboratories,  Argento  Records  and  Tartarus  Tapes.

  Distorted  amp  noises  along  with  some  heavy  riffing  starts  off  the  album  while  all  of  the  musical  instruments  on  the  recording  have  a  very  powerful  sound  to  them.  When  guitar  solos  and  leads  are  utilized  they  are  done  in  a  very  melodic  style  along  with  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  bringing  in a   great  amount  of  blast  beats.

  When  tremolo  picking  is  utilized  it  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling  while  the  vocals  are  done  in  a  very  deep  yet  grim  style.  Throughout  the  recording  you  can  also  hear  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts  and  at  times  the  music  also gets  very  atmospheric  sounding  as  well  as  mixing  in  some  psychedelic  elements.

  All  of  the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  while  the  riffs  also  add  in  a  decent  amount  of  melody.  Melodic  Gregorian  chants  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  one  of  the  tracks  and  as  the  album  progresses  a  small  amount  of  clean  playing  is  also added  onto  the  recording  and  the  music  also  gets  very  abstract  and  hallucinogenic  sounding  at  times,  clear  vocals  can  also  be  heard  briefly  on  the  closing  track.  The production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  Dutch  and  cover  nihilism  themes.

  In  my  opinion  this  is  another  great  sounding  recording  from  Verwoed  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  atmospheric  and  psychedelic  black  metal,  you  should  check  out  this  album.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "De  val"  and  "Het  bedriegende  oog".  8 out  of  10.

Verwoed/Bodemloos/Argento Records/2016 EP Review

  Verwoed  are  a  band  from  the  Netherlands  that  plays  a  psychedelic  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their  2016  ep  "Bodemloos"  which  will  be  released  in  July  by  Argento  Records.

  A  very  melodic black  metal  guitar  lead  starts  off  the  album  and  they  are  also  a  very  huge  parts  of  all  of t he  songs  before  going  into  more  of  a  heavier  yet  atmospheric  direction  which  also  introduces  grim  and  high  pitched  screams  onto  the  recording  and  when  the  music  speeds  up  a  great  amount  of  blast  beats  can  be  heard.

  A  great  amount  of  tremolo  picking  can  be  heard  during  the  faster  sections  of  the  songs  which  also  gives  the  music  more  of  a  raw  black  metal  feeling  and  the  songs  also  bring  in  a  great  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts while  you  can  also  hear  all  of  the  musical  instruments  that  are  present  on  the  recording.

  Clean  playing  can  be  heard  in  some  of  the  songs  and  some  of the  tracks  are  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  as  the  album  progresses  psychedelic  elements  are  added  into  the  music  more  and  all  3  of  the  tracks  sound  very  different  from  each  other  and  when  synths  sre  utilized  they  give  the  music  more  of  an  ambient  feeling.

  Verwoed  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  modern,  heavy,  raw  and  atmospheric  while  also  mixing  in  elements  of  psychedelia  and  ambient  to  create  something  very  original,  the production  sounds  very  professional  while  the  lyrics  are  written  in  the  musicians  native  tongue  and  cover  nihilistic  themes.

  In  my  opinion  Verwoed  are  a  very  great  sounding  psychedelic  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACK  "Bodemloos".  8/5  out  of  10.
