This is a review of a split album between Spain and U.K's Marahkain and Gibralter's Days of Our Lives called "Journey Through Pain And Suffering" which was released by Senseless Life Records in the year of 2014 and we will start off the review with Marahkan which also had their previous ep reviewed in this zine and plays a very atmospheric and diverse from of black metal.
Their side of the split starts up with dark avant garde synths which also bring in elements of classical and chamber music and after the intro the synths still have a very powerful presence in the music and they start getting a lot more heavy and dark along with some grim black metal screams.
The band start playing a synth dominated form of atmospheric black metal along with a good amount of blast beats and mid 90's elements as well as bringing in a mixture of both clean and heavy parts and as time goes on by growls are utilized in the vocals and the band adds in death metal influences to their black metal sound.
Melody seems to have a huge part in the sound this band creates as well as having a couple of songs that are very long and epic in length and they also have a very raw side to them at time s which really shows on their last track which is an early Darkthrone cover which they also mix in with their own sound.
Marahkain continue the diverse, atmospheric and melodic style of black metal of their previous ep as well as showing they have become better musicians, the production sounds very dark and powerful, while the lyrics cover darkness and occultism themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Marahkain and if you are a fan of atmospheric black/death metal, you should check out their side of the split. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Lunar Omen" and "The Whore In The Black Castle".
Next up is Days of Our Lives a 1 man band that plays a very depressive form of black metal.
His side of the split starts off with some depressive sounding keyboards and after a minute the music gets a lot of heavier and goes into a slow black metal direction along with some depressive screams which sound a little bit on the deep side and the music also keeps the keyboards around as well as the vocals having a melodic edge to t hem at times.
You can hear a little bit of a black/doom influence being mixed in with the depressive black metal sound and this project only brings in 2 songs that are very long in length and both stick to a slow depressive black metal direction while the second track has a small amount of spoken word parts being utilized.
Days Of Our Lives has a typical depressive black metal sound but uses a different style of vocals to stand out in this genre, the production is very dark sounding and the lyrics cover dark and depressive themes.
In my opinion Days of Our Lives are a very great sounding depressive black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out his side of th e split. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Disappointment".
In conclusion I feel this is a very great sounding split and I would recommend it to all fans of atmospheric and depressive black metal. 8 out of 10.
