Grue are a 1 man band from Boston, Massachusetts that has been featured before in this zine with a musical style I would describe as being a very dark and raw form of occult black metal and this is a review of his 2013 album "Casualty Of The Psychic Wars" which was released by Eternal Death Records.
"Casualty Of The Psychic Wars" which is also the first song on the album as well as title track opens up with fast, raw and primitive sounding black metal guitar and bass riffs as well as some drums and high pitched screams and then the music slows down a bit and adds in melody as well as alternating between fast and slow parts which also leads to blast beats coming in and out.
"Calling Down the Stars" begins with fast and melodic black metal guitar riffs as well as some blast beats from the drums before adding in some mid paced sections and you can also hear the bass guitars before the screams kick in along with some slower sections and deep growls which leads to the music alternating between slow, mid paced and fast parts and halfway through the song there is a brief use of spoken word parts before getting heavy again.
"Lament of the Spheres" opens up with slow and dark sounding guitar riffs which also utilize some melody as well as some drums and a couple of minutes later avant garde sounds and acoustic guitars are added into the music and towards the end tribal style drum beats become a part of the music.
"In the House Of Nemesis" starts up with heavy guitar riffs and drums along with some melody being thrown into the guitar riffing and a couple of minutes later it goes into a faster direction along with blast beats and black metal screams and after awhile the music starts to alternate between slow and fast parts.
"They Who Walk Behind The Skies" which is also the last song on the album begins with melodic guitar leads and a minute later heavy guitar riffs and drums kick in as well as some clean playing which leads up to some fast and raw black metal guitar riffs as well as some blast beats from the drums before slowing down and adding in grim screams and then the song starts to alternate between slow and fast parts.
Song lyrics cover darkness and occultism themes, while the production has a very dark, raw and heavy sound along with some of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Grue and if you are a fan of dark, melodic, heavy and raw occult black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Casualty Of The Psychic Wars'' and "In the House Of Nemesis". RECOMMENDED BUY.
