Vulpus are a band from Portugal that plays an atmospheric form of post black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Certitude" which will be released in June by Pest Productions.
Atmospheric soundscapes along with some clean guitars start off the album and they also mix in elements of post rock and humming are also used briefly and after the intro drum beats are added onto the recording and after awhile the music goes into a lot more heavier musical direction.
Vocals are mostly grim yet high pitched screams while the album is more rooted in the more modern era of the genre and when the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs a more raw feeling along with the solos and leads being in a more melodic post metal style.
Throughout the recording you can hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with some of the songs being very long and epic in length and some songs also bringing a small amount of clean playing and as the album progresses a brief use of spoken word samples can be heard and elements of drone, ambient and noise are also used at times.
Vulpus plays a style of post black metal that is very atmospheric while also having more aggression than a lot of bands from the same genre and also mixing in touches of noise, drone and ambient to create something very different, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover anomie, the absurd of Camus and anthropocentrism.
In my opinion Vulpus are a very great sounding atmospheric post black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Like Troxler's Fading" and "Along Obsidian Shores". 8 out of 10.
