Thelemic Gates are a band from Finland that plays a very progressive form of occult black metal and this is a review of t heir self released 2020 demo "Sielun koettelemuksien porteilla".
Dark riffing starts off the demo while also introducing synths onto the recording and ritualistic spoken word parts can also be heard briefly before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also uses a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking and the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams.
The riffs also add in a decent amount of melody while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The music also has a great amount of 90's influences along with the guitar solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style when they are utilized, the closing track is very long and epic in length and also introduces clean playing onto the recording.
Thelemic gates plays a style of black emtal that is very raw, progressive and heavily rooted in the mid 90's era. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics are written in a mixture of English and Finnish and are inspired by the writings of Aliester Crowley and cover Occultism, Spirituality, Witchcraft, Misanthropy, Anti Authoritarian Free Thinking and Worship Of Nature themes.
In my opinion Thelemic Gates are a very great sounding progressive occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Luciferin Valo" and "The Grey Aura Of Melancholia". 8/5 out of 10.
