Hauntologist are a duo from Poland that plays a very atmospheric form of post black metal and this is a review of their 2024 album "Hollow" which will be released in February by No Solace.
Clean playing starts off the album before going into a very fast and raw musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while melodies can also be heard in some of the guitar riffing and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Vocals are mostly angry sounding black metal screams while the songs also add in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. At times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding along with the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic post metal style and clean playing also returns on some of the later tracks.
Keyboards are also added into certain sections of the recording along with a couple of songs also adding in a brief use of spoken word parts as well as one song also introducing clear vocals onto the album. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover anxiety and hallucination themes..
In my opinion Hauntologist are a very great sounding atmospheric post black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Golem" "Hollow" and "Gardermoen". 8 out of 10.
