Vinterriket/Horizontmelancholie/Heimatfolk/2009 CD Review

Vinterriket is a 1 man band from Germany who been interviewed by this zine that has done black metal, dark ambient and neo folk albums and has decided to stick with the neofolk approach for this recording "Horizontmelancholie" which was released by Heimatfolk during the year of 2009.

Drum programming is mostly slow beats that have a very dark trance like feel, while the synths have an ethereal/ambient feel that captures the European forests with its dark sound with a good amount of avant garde music influences being added.

Acoustic guitars used a lot of open chords and open strings that are finger picked to give the music a dark neo folk feel, while the vocals are all clean singing vocals that have a black metal edge on the rougher parts of the singing mixed in with some whispered vocals.

Lyrics are written in German and are mostly about nature, while the production which was mastered by Axel Frank at the Blue Loungr Studios in Berlin, Germany has a very dark and professional feel to it.

In my opinion this is a good release from Vinterriket and while the more close minded fans of his black metal work might not enjoy this album, people who like everything this guy puts out should enjoy this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Durch Die Weiten der Landschaft" "Bergel" and "Wogan des Firmanamentes". RECOMMENDED BUY.
