Uitzichtloos Interview

1.For those that have never heard of you before can you tell us a little bit about the band?

Uitzichtloos was founded somewhere in 2013 by M and R. They released a digital EP called Leeg before I joined. Our aim is to create the music we like and that represents who we are. All of us have been in different bands before Uitzichtloos.

2.Recently you have released a new album, how would you describe the musical sound that is presented on the recording and also how does it differ from your previous demo and ep?

The demo is much rawer. Nevelmasker has a raw approach to it, but contains a lot of melody. I would say apart from the classic Scandinavian sound where obviously are influenced by, we also adapted some tunes from the eastern black metal scene. For me Blood in our Wells from Drudkh is a very important record.

3.The band has only been around for a year but has so far released a demo, ep and one full length, do you feel that you put a lot of time and effort into the band?
Yes, we put a lot of effort and time in the record. But mostly by composing our own. We share ideas by mail and when we get together we start building a song. Nevelmasker was written and mainly recorded in a 3 month period. Which might seem fast, but when the inspiration comes it`s unstoppable. We all compose and get extremely inspired when recording. We also believe in the power of improvisation. In previous bands we played the songs so many times before recording, the urgent feeling got lost. Now you have pure songs, recorded with a certain hunger you need to capture magic.

4.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band explores with the music?

Mainly our songs deal with local myths and such, like Witte Wieven and Dwaallichten. They`re also about death, misanthropy, darkness and auto mutilation. We get inspired by our surroundings and by poetry we read.

5.I know that the band name means hopeless in Dutch, what was the decision behind using it for the name of the band?

We`re a Dutch band. So it`s obviously we wanted a Dutch name. You can interpret the name in different ways. If you`ve ever been in Groningen you`ll see  there`s nothing. No mountains, no woods only fields of grass and meadows. You can see as far as you like, yet you won`t see anything `cause there`s nothing to see. There is no view (it`s Uitzichtloos).

6.What are some of the best shows that the band has played so far and also how would you describe your stage performance?

I don`t think Uitzichtloos will ever be doing concerts. Don`t get me wrong. I`ve been on stage many times and playing shows are extremely rewarding. But it also takes a lot of effort. Before you know it you`re playing your tunes over and over again and it kills your creativity. At the moment our main goal is to create the music we love. So no shows for the moment.

7.Do you have any touring or show plans for the new album?

No, see previous question.

8.The new album was released on Vacula Productions, are you happy with the help they have given you so far?

Yes, we`re very satisfied. Vacula has kept all promises made and has done a great job so far. We hope to work with them again in the (near) future.

9.On a worldwide level how has the feedback been to your music by fans of black metal?

It`s been good, which is nice. But it is important to stretch out we`re mainly doing this for ourselves. So if the world hated us, that`s fine. We playing the stuff we like to hear and don`t care about what others might think.
But we do have some positive feedback by people close to us and total strangers, which is nice of course.

10.Where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?

There`s a EP coming soon, called “De Oogst”. This will be raw and fast. It also contains a track inspired by Ede Staal (local hero who died some years ago) called Credo. Not sure when it`s out, but it should not take long. At the same time we`re already working on a new full-length. We recorded three tracks already and have about 9 other songs to choose from.
I think we will continue and expand the songwriting style used on Nevelmasker, but we will return to a much rawer sound.

11.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
The classic BM bands obviously. No need to name them. You know who they are. We`re still very involved in discovering new talent. Some bands you should check out are: Skaur, Vemod, Skogen, Cultes des Ghoules, Kjeld, Stilla, Grifteskymfning, Hadanfard, Svartrit, Fyrnask, Fluisteraars, Spite Extreme Wing etc. etc.
Too many!

12.What are some of your non musical interests?

We won`t answer to this question. I don`t think this is relevant. I don’t care about nonmusical interest from other bands either.

13.Before we wrap up this interview, do you have any final words or thoughts?

Thank you for the interview.
