Avernus Gate/Poetry Of Leathered Wings/Death Hymns/2023 EP Review

 

  Avernus  Gate  are  a  band  from  The  united  States  that  plays  a  very  raw  and  atmospheric  form  of  black  metal  and  this  is  a  review  of  their   2023  ep  "Poetry  Of  Leathered  Wings"  which  will  be  released  on  cassette  by  Death  Hymns.

 A  very  dark  yet  heavy  sound  starts  off  the  ep  while  the  keyboards  also  give  the  music  more  of  an  atmospheric  feeling  when  they  are  utilized.  Vocals  are  mostly  high  pitched  black  metal  screams  along  with  a  couple  of  the  tracks  also  being  very  long  and  epic  in  length  and  the  riffs  also  add  in  some  melodies  at  times.

  When  the  music  speeds  up  a  decent  amount  of  tremolo  picking  and  blast  beats  can  be  heard  which  also  gives  the  songs  more  of  a  raw  feeling.  The  recording  also  adds  in  a  lot  of  Scandinavian  and  Teutonic  influences  along  with  the  tracks  also  adding  in  a  good  mixture  of  slow,  mid  paced  and  fast  parts,  angry  shouts  are  also  added  on  the  closing  song.

  Avernus  gate  plays  a  style  of  black  metal  that  is  very  raw  and  atmospheric  in  the  classic  European  tradition.  The  production  sounds  very  raw  and  heavy  while  the  lyrics  cover  dark  and  poetic  themes.   

 In  my  opinion  Avernus  Gate  are  a  very  great  sounding  raw  and  atmospheric  black  metal  band  and  if  you  are  a  fan  of  this  musical  genre,  you  should  check  out  this  ep.  RECOMMENDED  TRACKS  INCLUDE  "Gleaming  Onyx  Temple"  and  "Poetry  of  Leathered  Wings".  8  out  of  10.
