Wolvhammer are a band from Minnesota that plays a mixture of black metal, sludge, death rock and punk and this is a review of their 2014 album "Clawing Into Black Sun" which will be released in July by Profound Lore.
A very dark and distorted sound starts off the album before adding into fast raw black metal elements and grim screams which leads to a more mid paced direction which also gives the music a punk rock feeling at times and after awhile the band starts alternating between slow, mid paced and fast parts to make their musical style sound a lot more interesting.
You can hear a good amount of doom and sludge metal influences along with a good balance between clean and heavy parts as time goes on by and there is also a short intro that utilizes drones and demonic sounds with the following track taking an even more raw and old school black metal approach and when they add in guitar leads there are mostly in a melodic post black metal direction and all of the musical instruments on the recording have a very powerful sound to them.
As the album progresses the music starts having a more blackened punk feeling at times along with some heavy death rock element s becoming a huge part of the bands musical sound as well as some of the tracks being very long and epic in length and the sludge and crust punk elements get a lot more stronger as the album progresses as well as the vocals adding in some of the harsher element s of hardcore at times and the last two tracks also brings in a small amount of clean singing which enhances the atmosphere of the recording.
Wolvhammer create a very interesting sound with their music with the main elements being black metal but you can hear traces of post, sludge, hardcore, punk and death rock all mixed in with their musical sound which results in the band sounding very original and diverse, the production sounds very dark and powerful while the lyrics cover dark, esoteric and depressive themes.
In my opinion Wolvhammer are a very great sounding mixture of black metal, sludge, punk and death rock and if you are a fan of those musical genres, you should check out this band. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Silver Key" "Slaves To The Grime" and "Clawing Into The Black Sun". 8 out of 10.
