We’re Glemsel from Copenhagen, Denmark and we play black metal. We formed the band in the late spring of 2019. At first, we began with playing a variety of genres - death metal, grindcore, and finally found out we had a common preference of playing black metal. The line-up consists of Joachim Højer on drums, Sune Pedersen on guitars, and Asmund Iversen on vocals and guitars. The newest addition to our group is Mikkel Alkjær on bass, so welcome to him!
2.Recently you have released your first album, can you tell us a little bit more about the musical style that is presented on the recording?
We obviously have inspiration from across the black metal spectrum - from the nineties to the modern Danish scene - but the starting point of the album was simply to create something we liked ourselves and could vouch for; to make black metal, without putting limits on the creativity.
3.What are some of the lyrical topics and subjects the band has explored so far with the music/
The lyrics are mainly about existence and the world situation. Contemplations regarding human experience, death, and the way of life on this earth.
4.What is the meaning and inspiration behind the name 'Glemsel'?
As with the lyrical themes, the word ‘glemsel’ roughly translates to ‘oblivion’ and reflects our fascination with the way life works: We’re here, then we’re not.
5.Can you tell us a little bit more about the artwork that is presented on the album cover?
The artwork is by French painter Odilon Redon in 1889. Asmund went to a museum in Denmark, as a general interest in arts, and discovered some of his early charcoal works. We all liked it a lot, thought it matched visually very well with the music we made and decided to use it for our debut.
6.Has the band had any opportunities to do any live shows?
As of right now we have not done any live shows. We can reveal that we have a potential gig in the beginning of December, but the current situation with this pandemic makes the future unforeseeable…
7.The new album was released on 'Vendetta Records', how did you get in contact with this label?
It all started out with an e-mail! We looked a bit around at potential labels we would like to release with. More specifically, we looked into the labels, that some of the Danish bands we like, are on - bands such as Ligfærd, Solbrud and Afsky. We found Vendetta Records and got in touch after recording our debut and got a positive response! Stefan [Vendetta Records] is a really cool guy with a great label, and we are extremely happy with the collaboration. We hope to release our next album with him as well.
8.On a worldwide level how has the reaction been to your music by fans of atmospheric black metal?
Worldwide we have been received very positively. The black metal scene is great, people are generally nice, and we are fortunate that a lot of people like our music. It’s also an interesting experience to read reviews in foreign languages, where we only recognize our own names and names of the songs. Luckily, we live in an age of google translate, so we know that most international reviews that we’ve read have been positive.
9.When can we expect newer music and also where do you see the band heading into musically during the future?
The new music we’re writing is concurrently aggressive, melancholic, emotional. We’re going to be more straight-to-the point, but also experiment with slow parts and atmosphere. There is no intention to re-invent ourselves, but we also won’t limit ourselves with the style which we have already presented. Black metal can be taken in a lot of different directions and is a genre that we like to explore whilst still acknowledging our love for the old-school sound.
Without promising too much, we can say that we’re going to be working on some demos during the autumn, and we plan on recording a full-length within the next year.
10.What are some of the bands or musical styles that have had an influence on your music and also what are you listening to nowadays?
We’ll give you a list. Some of the bands that we’ve taken inspiration from and also listen to are: Darkthrone, Burzum, Mayhem, Wodensthrone, Genfærd, Taphos, Immortal, Solbrud, Ligfærd. Some are obvious classics in black metal, and some are newer (both death- and black) metal bands. If there are some of these you don’t know, check them out!
11.What are some of your non musical interests?
Walking in the forest and drowning in the eternal oceans of human melancholy derived from merely existing.
Jokes aside, some of us study at the university and spend a lot of time wondering about the nature of our society, some of us work normal jobs. We live rather normal lives consisting of studying, working, working out, enjoying beverages and preparing food before eating it.
