Russia's solo project Frozen Ocean has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for a mixture of atmospheric black metal and depressive rock and this is a review of his album "Askdrömmar" which will be released in 2026 by Apocalyptic Witchcraft.
Dark soundscapes and water sounds start off the album while the keyboards also bring in elements of ambient which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. All of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them while some tracks also add in a small amount of clean playing.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the solos and leads are also done in a very melodic style. Vocals are mostly high pitched depressive black metal screams along with the album also having its atmospheric moments and some of the tracks also adds in a small amount of spoken words samples.
Field recordings are also utilized at times along with the music also adding in a lot of depressive rock elements. E-bows are also added into certain sections of the album and all of the songs stick to either a slow or mid tempo direction. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Norse Mythology, Darkness and Melancholy themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Frozen Ocean and if you are a fan of atmospheric black metal and depressive rock, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Mangata" "Gristimmar" "Kottkvarn" and "Brub=nkebergstunneln". 8 out of 10.
