Hagl are a band from Russia that plays a very melodic, raw and primitive form of pagan black metal and this is a review of their 2013 album "In The Heart" which was released by Casus Belli Musica.
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with a good amount of blast beats being thrown into the music, while the bass playing has a very dark tone with riffs that follow the riffing the riffing that are coming out of the guitars and at times they have a powerful sound to them, as for the synths when they are utilized later in the recording they bring a very dark, atmospheric and epic sound to the music.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast pagan black metal riffs that are very melodic, raw and primitive sounding with some folk, thrash and traditional metal elements being thrown into the riffing at times, while the lead guitars are very melodic sounding black metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars when they are utilized they use finger picking and full c hords to add some medieval qualities to the music.
Vocals are mostly grim sounding and high pitched pagan black metal screams along with a brief use of spoken word parts, while the lyrics cover Slavic Paganism themes, as for the production it has a very dark, heavy, raw and primitive sound to it while you can still hear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion Hagl are a very great sounding melodic, raw and primitive pagan/black metal band that is not afraid to experiment and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Heavy Gale" "Howl As A Wolf" and "Wake Up!". RECOMMENDED BUY.
