Montsegur are a band from Russia that plays a very raw and primitive form of old school black metal and this is a review of their self released 2013 demo "Under The Banner Of Witchcraft".
Drums range from slow, mid paced to fast drumming with some blast beats being utilized at times, while the bass playing has a very strong and powerful sound with heavy riffing that dominates throughout the recording, as for the synths they are only used on the intro and outro and they bring a very dark, atmospheric and evil sound to the demo.
Rhythm guitars range from slow, mid paced to fast old school black metal riffs that are very dark, raw and primitive sounding in the 90's tradition with some melody being thrown into the riffing at times, while the lead guitars are very melodic, raw and primitive sounding black metal guitar solos and leads, as for the acoustic guitars which are only utilized briefly use finger picking and full chords to enhance the dark atmosphere of the music as well as bringing in some epic elements.
Vocals are all grim sounding black metal screams, while the lyrics cover darkness and occult themes, as for the production it has a very dark, old school, raw and primitive sound while you can still h ear all of the musical instruments that are present on this recording.
In my opinion Montsegur are a very great sounding raw and primitive old school black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this demo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Dark Spell Over The Twilight Hills" and "Under The Banner Of Witchcraft". RECOMMENDED BUY.
