Sol Evil are a band from California that is legendary for their singer spending a decade in jail for an anti christian crime that play a satanic form of black metal and this is a review of their 2015 cassette compilation "Lux Diaboli" which consists of their 2012 ep "Karu Samsa" and 2014 ep "Descent Into Hell" and we will start off the review with their first ep.
"Karu Samsa"
Melodic Gregorian chants start off the first ep and after the intro the music starts going for more of a heavy and melodic sound along with some blackened death metal growls a few seconds later and once the high pitched screams kick in the music speeds up a bit and also brings in a decent amount of blast beats.
Throughout the recording there is a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the vocals using both growls and screams and there is also a small amount of clean singing being used at times as well as a brief use of spoken word parts and the songs go for more of a melodic black metal direction with both the riffs and solos while also having their raw moments and a good amount of death metal influences and they also bring in classical guitars on one of the tracks and they close the ep with a drone style outro.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Karu Samsu" and "Twilight Of the Holy".
"Descent Into Hell"
Melodic Gregorian chants start off the second ep and after the 2 and a half minute intro the music starts going for more of a fast and raw black metal sound that also incorporates a decent amount of blast beats while also being melodic at the same time and once high pitched screams are added into the music.
The songs bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and the last 2 tracks are also very long and epic in length and the vocals can also be very deep and grim at times and the songs also add in death metal influences at times along with the vocals on the last track adding in a small amount of growls and when solos and leads are utilized they are in a very melodic musical direction.
RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Enshroud Thy Kingdom In Sjadow" and "Descent Into Hell".
With both of these ep's Sol Evil bring out 2 different sounds of their musical style with the first recording being melodic black metal while the second one is more raw while both do contain death metal influences, the production sounds very dark and powerful while the lyrics on both recordings cover Satanism and Left hand Path themes.
In my opinion Sol Evil are a very great sounding satanic black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this compilation. 8 out of 10.
