Heathen are a 1 man band from Norway that plays a very raw and atmospheric form of viking/black metal and this is a review of their self titled 2015 cassette which was released by Caligari Records.
A very dark, raw and melodic sound starts off the cassette and you can hear some grim black metal screams that are mixed down low in the mix and over powered by the guitars which also have a depressive tone to them at times and when solos and leads are utilized they are very dark and melodic and a few of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
After awhile the music starts going for more of a mid paced and atmospheric musical direction and at times the tremolo picking from the guitars can be very raw and also adds an early 90's Norwegian black metal feeling to the recording and after awhile the music does speed up at times and also introduces a small amount of blast beats onto the recording along with the riffs getting very fast and primal while the main focus remains more on a mid paced viking/black metal sound and one of the tracks brings in a brief use of keyboards before returning back to a heavier direction.
Heathen plays a style of viking/black metal that is very raw and old school and also mixes in a little of atmospheric and depressive elements along with the guitars being the main focus, the production sounds very dark and raw while the song themes focus on Norse Paganism.
In my opinion Heathen are a very great sounding viking/black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Clutches Of Hedonism" "Diabolical Hypnotism" "Banished To The Land Of Ice". 8 out of 10.
