Culak is a solo project from Texas that plays a mixture of post black and doom metal and this is a review of his 2019 album "Art Of Inflicting" which was released by Nailed Nazarene Industries.
Sounds of babies crying and distorted drones start off the album before going into a heavier musical direction. Elements of doom metal can also be heard in the slower sections of the songs while death metal growls are also utilized quite a bit throughout the recording as well as mixing in a blackened touch and most of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
Clear singing can also be heard in certain sections of the recording while the riffs also add in a decent amount of melody. Some songs also add in a small amount of clean playing and spoken word parts along with the solos and leads being done in a very melodic style as well as adding in some touches of post metal.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw black metal feeling as well as the songs also adding in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and at times the music also gets very atmospheric sounding and influences of shoegaze are also utilized more as the album progresses. The production sounds very raw and heavy while the lyrics cover dark, depressive and philosophical themes.
In my opinion Culak is a very great sounding atmospheric mixture of post black and doom metal and if you are a f an of those musical genres, you should check out this solo project. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Heart Of Woe" and "Moth-Eaten". 8 out of 10.
