Netra is a solo artist originally from France but now living in Norway with a musical style that mixes depressive black metal with trip hop and on this recording he teamed up with We'rewolves a hip hip duo from California and the ep is called "Dreading Consciousness" and was released by Hypnotic Dirge Records.
The ep starts out with some dark experimental sounds and atmospheric synths and a few seconds later drum programming, elements of trip hop and hip hop style vocals are added into the music and when the music goes into the second song they copy some lyrics from Christian Death's "Romeo Distress" as well as adding in sex and violence samples.
As the ep progresses dark wave style guitar riffing is added into the music along with some gothic and industrial influences and on the final song you can hear some black metal style guitar riffing in the background and the music starts adding in more depressive elements and also combining them with hip hop and after awhile classic rock style guitar leads are added into the music which then leads up to some depressive black metal screams.
On these 3 songs that are displayed on this ep you can hear a lot of musical genres being mixed together that are not usually mixed and while depressive black metal has been mixed with trip hop before I have never heard it mixed with rap or hip hop until know and while the black metal elements only show up on the last song there is still a lot of originality in the music that is present on this ep.
Song lyrics cover dark, violent and depressive themes, while the production has a very strong, powerful, heavy and dark sound along with the last song being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion this joint effort between Ne'tra and We'rewolves is very original sounding and while it is not a musical style that i am used to I can see this appealing a lot to more open minded fans of metal and trip hop music. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Enter the Void". 7/5 out of 10.
