Vita Odiosa are a 1 man band from Italy that plays a depressive and ambient form of black metal and this is a review of his self released 2013 album "Vita?".
The album starts out with some classical guitars which utilize finger picking and full chords and after a few minutes black metal guitar riffs start creeping into the music and after a few seconds they take over and add in some depressive screams and dark sounding melodies as well as having and atmospheric background behind them and you can also hear some programmed drum beats and as time goes on by guitar leads and elements of ambient are thrown into the music.
As the album progresses synths start getting more powerful as well as enhancing the atmospheric and ambient sounds this recording possesses while also not taking over the album and letting the guitars and vocals have a very powerful presence, and after 6 minutes into the second song classical guitars make a return and they start mixing in with the synths and it adds more epic qualities to the record as well as having grim black metal screams on top of it and when the heavy parts make a return the album starts going into a faster direction for a few minutes before returning to a more slow and melodic sound.
Once the album gets to the third song it is started up by some acoustic guitars as well as adding in synths a minute later and after 5 minutes it starts going in a more mid paced, melodic and atmospheric sounding black metal direction and it stays in that direction for 13 minutes until the synths start taking over the music for around 3 minutes and then the music goes into a more slow and depressive black metal direction and also continues in that direction on the last song but the acoustic guitars do return after 8 minutes and take over for 3 minutes before returning back to a more atmospheric and heavy sound.
This musical project brings out a lot of darkness and sorrow with the music as well as having a great amount of sorrow being evoked from the music and the music is very diverse and while it is not the most original project I have heard this 1 man project does create some very melodic and epic sounding depressive black metal.
Song lyrics are written in Italian and cover sorrow, desperation, and death themes, while the production has a very dark sound with all of the songs being very long and epic in length as well as all of them being more than 20 minutes long.
In my opinion Vita Odiosa are a very great sounding ambient depressive black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Io Sono Dolore" and "Vita". RECOMMENDED BUY.
