Frostland Darkness are a 1 man band from Finland that plays a very old school form of black metal and this is a review of his 2013 album "Ad Moriendum Gratia" which was released by Inverse Records.
The album starts out with grim black metal vocals before going into some raw old school guitar riffing along with drums and after a few minutes the music goes into a more mid paced direction and then speeding up with blast beats before returning to a slower direction.
When the album goes into the nest song clean playing are melody are added into the music before going into a heavier direction along with some faster parts being utilized at times which leads to the whole album mixing fast and slow parts together and you can hear a great amount of early 90's Norwegian black metal influences being utilized on this record and the last song is all instrumental.
While there is not much in the way of originality Frostland Darkness seems to know his old school black metal very well and his fast stuff brings back the rawer elements of early 90's black metal, while the slower stuff utilizes a great amount of sorrow and darkness.
Song lyrics are written in Finnish and cover darkness, cold and ritualistic themes, while the production has a very dark, raw and old school sound that goes back to the early 90's along with most of the songs being very long and epic in length.
In my opinion Frostland Darkness are a very great sounding old school black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Reinaaja" "Tuhon Kirkkaudessa" and "Rituaali". 8 out of 10.
