Apocryphal Voice are a band from Finland that plays a very depressive form of avant garde black/dark metal and this is a review of their 2014 album which will be released on December 12th by Inverse Records.
A very dark sounding keyboard starts off the album before going into more of a progressive black metal direction along with some clean singing vocals that bring in an avant garde feeling to the recording and all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them and the solos and leads they band uses add more melody to the songs that they are a part off.
When the music speeds up more black metal elements are added into the music along with some raw guitar riffing, blast beats and high pitched screams which they also mix in with the more avant garde sound and the band also brings in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts and some of the tracks also add clean playing into certain sections of their songs while still sticking mostly to a heavier direction.
A good portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and after awhile the band also starts mixing in influences from death metal some of their songs while the black metal vocals when they are utilized start adding in more of a depressive atmosphere and all of the songs bring in a great amount of variety to keep the album interesting and original sounding and towards the end of the album traces of doom metal can also be heard.
Apocryphal Voice takes an avant garde style of black metal and mixes it in with some depressive and dark metal elements as well as adding in a good amount of influences from death metal to create an album that takes this genre into a new direction, the production sounds very powerful while the lyrics cover depression, disgust and occult themes.
In my opinion Apocryphal Voice are a very great sounding avant garde black/dark metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Underneath A Mask" "Tongue of Kali" "Mussy trail" and "Rebel Angels". 8 out of 10.
