Russia's solo project Frozen Ocean have returned with a new recording which shows the music going into more of an ambient style of atmospheric post black metal and this is a review of his self released 2017 album "Transcience".
Ambient style synths start off the album along with some of the tracks being instrumentals in that musical direction while a great portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length and as the album progresses elements of drone are also added into certain sections of the recording.
At times the music incorporates soundscapes and field recordings along with some songs also adding in elements of electronic music and on the 5th track the music goes into more of a heavier, raw and fast musical direction which also utilizes a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats.
A decent amount of melody can also be heard in the guitar riffing while the riffs also bring in a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as mixing the ambient and heavy parts together at times along with some touches of post metal and when vocals are utilized they are mostly high pitched black metal screams. when guitar solos and leads are brought onto the recording they are done in a very melodic fashion and death metal growls and melodic vocals can also be heard briefly, one track also adds in a small amount of clean guitars.
On this recording Frozen Ocean brings in a great amount of ambient tracks as well a s mixing that influence in the more atmospheric black metal style along with some elements of post rock to create something very different, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover winter, death and depression themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Frozen Ocean and if you are a fan of dark ambient, post rock and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Brooks Run To The Comet Lake" "Lurker" "Mare Imbrium" and "Isig Flod". 8 out of 10.
