Cold Cell are a band from Switzerland that has had music reviewed before in this zine and plays a very dark, atmospheric and modern form of black metal and this is a review of their 2021 album "The Greater Evil" which will be released on April 23rd by Les Acteurs de I'Ombre Productions.
Clean vocals and synths start off the album while clean playing and atmospheric soundscapes are added into the music a few seconds later before going into a heavier direction. During the faster sections of the songs a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
Vocals are mostly high pitched black metal screams while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The atmospheric elements are also mixed in with the heavier sections of the music along with the riffs also adding in a good amount of melody and a great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts along with the solos and leads also being done in a very distorted yet melodic style as well as some samples also being added into some parts of the recording. All of the musical instruments on the album also have a very powerful sound to them and as the album progresses a brief use of clean playing can also be heard on a few tracks. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover the modern worlds, human devolution, death of spirituality and loss of consciousness.
In my opinion this is another great sounding album from Cold Cell and if you are a fan of dark, modern and atmospheric black metal, you should check out this recording. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Scapegoat Season" "Greatest Of All Species" and "No Escape". 8 out of 10.
