Spain's solo project Negativa has returned with a new recording which shows the music going for more of a bleak and oppressive style of black metal and this is a review of his 2022 album "04" which will be released on January 28th as a joint effort between Mystiskaos, Dissociative Visions and Nebular Carcoma.
Avant garde style soundscapes start off the album before going into a heavier direction while all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the vocals are mostyl high pitched yet depressive black metal screams.
Some of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the faster sections of the songs also add in a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking which also gives the music more of a raw feeling. Throughout the recording you can also hear a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts.
At times the music also gets atmospheric sounding along with a couple of the songs also adding in a brief use of clean playing as well as one track also being an instrumental and the album brings in a more modern approach, when guitar solos and leads are finally utilized they are also done in a very melodic yet depressive style. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover suffering and hopelessness themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Negativa and if you are a fan of bleak and oppressive black metal, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "XXII" and "XXIX". 8 out of 10.
