Theomachia are a solo project from Italy that plays a very mid tempo and hypnotic form of black metal with some elements of new wave and post punk and this is a review of his 2022 ep "The Theosophist" which will be released in February as a joint effort between Xenoglossy and Onism Productions.
Ambient style soundscapes start off the ep along with some clean playing a few seconds later while clear vocals can also be heard at times. Grim black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording as well as the solos and leads also being done in a very melodic style and when the music speeds up a decent amount of blast b eats can be heard.
When tremolo picking is utilized they also give the songs more of a raw feeling while the songs also add in a decent mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts. The songs also mix in a decent amount of 2nd wave Norwegian influences along with some touches of post punk and new wave in the cleaner sections.
Theomachia plays a style of black metal that is very hypnotic and mid tempo sounding as well as mixing both the old school and modern styles with some touches of new wave and post punk to create something very original sounding. The production sounds very dark and r aw while the lyrics cover Theosophy and Greek Philosophy.
In my opinion Theomachia are a very great sounding hypnotic black metal solo project and if you are looking for something very original sounding, you should check out this ep. RECOMMENDED TRACK "The Suicide of the Dmiurge". 8 out of 10.
