Útgarðar are an international duo with embers from Sweden and the United States that plays an old school form of black metal and this is a review of their album "Fire Smoked Upon The Wolf's Back" which will be released in 2024 as a joint effort between ATMF and De Tenebrarum Principio.
A very fast and raw sound starts off the album along with a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats. Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while the vocals are mostly grim sounding black metal screams as well as some clear pagan singing also being utilized at times.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while the solos and leads also remain very true to an old school style. Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's second wave era along with a great portion of the tracks also being very long and epic in length, synths and percussion can also be heard on a couple of songs.
Útgarðar plays a style of black metal that is very old school in the 90's Nordic second wave tradition. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Norse Paganism and Mythology themes.
In my opinion Útgarðar are a very great sounding old school black metal duo and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this duo. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Pyres Of Utgard" and "Fire Smoked Upon The Wolf's Back". 8 out of 10.
