Morrigan are a band from Germany that plays an old school form of pagan black metal and this is a review of their 2022 album "Anwynn" which will be released on June 24th by Werewolf Records.
A nature orientated intro starts off the album along with some epic sounding synths a few seconds later which also mixes in with the heavier sections of the songs at times. A great portion of the tracks are also very long and epic in length while the clean pagan vocals are done in the Hammerheart style era of Bathory.
Melodies are also added into some of the guitar riffing while folk instruments can also be heard in some parts of the album. Grim black metal screams are also a very huge part of the recording along with some growls also being utilized at times and when the music finally speeds up a decent amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the recording more of a raw feeling.
Most of the music is also very heavily rooted in the 90's era along with the solos and leads also remaking true to a very raw and old school style when they utilized and on a later track goes into more of a melodic direction as well as most of the music sticking to either a slow or mid tempo direction. The production sounds very dark and raw while the lyrics cover Norse and Celtic Paganism.
In my opinion Morrigan are a very great sounding epic and old school pagan black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Herald Of The Sheep" "Blind Witch" and "Ivy". 8 out of 10.
