Ecferus are a 1 man band from Indiana that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of his 2015 cassette "Prehistory" which will be released later on this year by Fragile Branch Recordings.\
Nature sounds start off the cassette along with some ambient and atmospheric synths which also show up again on a later track a few seconds later and after a minute melodic guitar riffing is added onto the recording along with some spoken word parts which also evolve into black metal screams and you can also hear some acoustic guitars and clean playing being used into certain sections of the recording.
When solos and leads are utilized they add more melody to the recording while still having a raw edge to them and when the music speeds up it starts bringing in more of a raw style of black metal while also mixing in melodic elements along with a good amount of blast beats and there is also a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts present throughout the recording along with most of the tracks being very long and epic in length and all of the musical instruments also have a very powerful sound to them.
Ecferus plays a style of black metal that is very modern, raw, heavy, melodic, epic and atmospheric while also adding a good amount of variety in all 4 of the tracks, the production sounds very dark, raw and heavy while the lyrics cover evolutionary anthropology, mythology and science.
In my opinion Ecferus are a very great sounding atmospheric black metal project and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this cassette. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "One Who First Make Fire" and "Walk With the Feral". 8 out of 10.
