Myrddin are a 1 man band from the United Kingdom that has been featured before in this zine with a musical style that mixes atmospheric occult black metal with dungeon synth and this is a review of his self released 2015 recording "Profane Metaphysics (Recovered Demos 2003-2006)" which is a compilation of demo songs from the early 2000's and display more of a raw approach to black metal while still being very atmospheric.
Nature sounding and dark dungeon style synths start off the compilation and after a minute the music starts bringing in more of a raw and lo-fi black metal sound along with some clean singing vocals and a few minutes later melodic and atmospheric elements are added into the music and a good portion of the tracks are very long and epic in length.
When synths are utilized more they bring in more of a dark ambient feeling to the songs and the songs also bring in a good mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts as well as adding in grim screams that are mixed down low in the mix as well as the heavier sections mixing in with the more atmospheric synth sound.
As the compilation progresses one of the tracks also brings in melodic Gregorian chants while the later t racks go for more of a raw and experimental ambient black metal sound. which also brings in rain sounds and clean playing at times while one of the later tracks also bring in a small amount of melodic guitar leads and the last track also shows the music adding in a small amount of spoken word samples along with the track going for more of an ambient direction.
With these demo tracks Myrddin played more of a raw style of black metal while the atmospheric, ambient and dungeon synth elements which dominated alter recordings are also present on some of the songs, the production sound s very dark, raw and lo-fi while the lyrics cover Occult and Metaphysical themes.
In my opinion this is another great sounding recording from Myrrdin and if you are a fan of raw, atmospheric and ambient forms of black metal, you should check out this compilation. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "Invocation Of Plague Winds" and "Profane Metaphysics". 8 out of 10.
