Corpus Diavolis are a band from France that plays an occult form of black metal and this is a review of their 2017 album "Atra Lumen" which will be released in April by Aeternitas Tenebrarum Musicae Fundamentum.
A very dark, heavy and atmospheric sound starts off the album along with some melodic riffs and guitar leads being added onto the recording a few seconds later and after awhile grim black metal screams start to make their presence known and you can also hear all of the musical instruments that are present on the recording.
When the music speeds up a great amount of tremolo picking and blast beats can be heard which also gives the music a more raw black metal feeling along with synths also being added into certain sections of the recording and the songs also bring in a great mixture of slow mid paced and fast parts.
Some of the tracks are long and epic in length and as the album progresses elements of death metal can be heard in some of the guitar riffing and one track also brings in a brief use of melodic yet ritualistic chants along with t he synths also mixing in an occult atmosphere at times and there is also a brief use of spoken word parts and shouts and avant garde elements are added onto the closing track..
Corpus Diavolis plays a style of occult black metal that is very dark, and modern sounding while also having its raw and ritualistic moments, the production sounds very professional while the lyrics cover Ceremonial Magick, Tarot, Shamanism, Thelema, Esoteric Journey, A. Jodorowsky films and philosophical transcendence themes.
In my opinion Corpus Diavolis are a very great sounding occult black metal band and if you are a fan of this musical genre, you should check out this album. RECOMMENDED TRACKS INCLUDE "The Ardent Jewel of His Presence" "Wine Of the Beast" and "Sick Waters". 8/5 out of 10.
