Murk Rider are a band from Northern California that plays a mixture of black and stoner doom metal and this is a review of their self released 2019 album "Exile Of Shadows" which will be released on June 20th.
Sounds of fire burning start off the album along with some atmospheric soundscapes and acoustic guitars a few seconds later as well as some sounds of nature. Vocals are mostly aggressive sounding black metal screams while the slower sections of the music are heavily rooted in stoner doom metal.
All of the tracks are very long and epic in length and when the music speeds up a great amount of blast beats and tremolo picking can be heard which also gives the songs more of a raw feeling. When guitar solos and leads are utilized they are done in a very aggressive and melodic style.
Throughout the recording you can also hear a great mixture of slow, mid paced and fast parts while all of the musical instruments have a very powerful sound to them. At times the music also gets very tribal and ritualistic sounding along with the riffs also adding in a decent amount of melody and as the album progresses a brief use of clean female and male vocals can also be heard, synths and spoken word parts are also added on the closing track. The production sounds very professional while the lyrics are based upon the concept of Joseph Campbell's Heroic Journey's and Shamanism themes.
In my opinion Murk Rider are a very great sounding mixture of black and stoner doom metal and if you are a fan of t hose musical genres, you should check out t his band. RECOMMENDED TRACK "Return". 8 out of 10.
